Weekend Update 8/16/20

While I'm waiting for decals to dry on some of my reefers, I tried a new technique for modeling streaking rust patches. This was done by using a sponge with watercolor paints from a tube. After the rust patches fully dried, I used a damp brush in a downward motion to steak it. Best of all, if you mess up, you can simply remove all of it with water.

I removed the rust from the left side on that last photo.

Still needs a bit more experimenting but I think it's promising.

The wiring is nothing fancy. The ditch lights are wired to F1, the step lights wired to F3, and the head light wired to F0. I used a Digitrax DN136K1C decoder and 1.2K ohm resisters for the LEDs.


Yep it's a modified Kaslo kit. I ended up designing and printing a lot of new parts to improve the kit.

Awesome!  I just took delivery of one last week myself. What are the odds the only one I’ve ever seen completed shows up here?  What did you wind up printing/ changing?

It might be easier to say what I didn't design and print, but I printed the front/rear walkways and steps, front/rear/side doors, number boards, sand fill hatches, snow plow, jacking pads, fuel tank, winterization hatch, see-through Q-fans, horn, and the cab interior. It started as just doing a few parts, then it just snowballed and I anything I saw that I could improve I went ahead and did it.

This is my first attempt at using Union Station Products sides. Pullman Standard lunch counter diners #1566-1577. Built for use on the El Capitan in 1950. I still need to add the roof details, underbody details, letterboards, trucks, couplers, and diaphragms, but I thought I'd post a progress shot. The fluting is a bit thick to my eye, but the windows are correct and they fit well on the American Limited core kit (my last one....).

I had the same thought about the fluting that came with the NKP lounge/sleeper-buffet car I was building from the US kit. The old Rowa semi-corrugated cars are based on C&O/NKP prototypes and the fluting deatil is pretty decent. I sliced off the sides of a Rowa coach just above the fluting, cut off the US sides just below the windows -- but left the doors intact --and spliced the two half-sides together. At least that's what I;m going to do. I have to file down the Rowa body sides where the doors are inset, and had to leave a narrow full section of Rowa side to fill in where the US sides are too short, but it should turn out pretty good. Painting the window gaskets/trim is going to be interesting but I think a paint pen can do the trick.
