Rapido announced PRR X31a boxcar in HO

FNR 2006 has the recessed or indented  roof.

FNR 2008 has the flush roof.

Using FNR 2008 and @Lemosteam turtle roof kit, one can have an X31f.

I stand corrected. Over the years, I’ve only seen FNR#2008.

I’m not sure of the double-door class of the FNR model. The Rapido version will be based on the inset-roof variation.

There are lots of things they make in HO that I would buy in N Scale.  But what N Scaler in their right mind would want NP boxcars, multiple steam generator cars, FA units..............the list goes on and on 😥

Well, I beg to differ, I’d buy the FA’s, and a bunch of the radial roof NP cars, and.... but apparently I’m not in my right mind

There's an interesting discussion about these cars on the PRR ioGroup.

Here's some fleet numbers that I found interesting that others here might appreciate

X31a single door  - 6700

X31a double door  - 500 (+109 converted x31 cars)

X31b double door  - 1190 (PRR.railfan.net claims 1700)

X31c double door  - 810

looking at these numbers Fine N scale made a good choice with their prototypes the X31B/C outnumbered the DD x31a by at least 2000 to 609. they are also correct for the DT&I and later NP cars.

Bruce Smith also did an excellent presentation about the entire x31 fleet at the recent Hindsight 2020 online RPM that went into great detail.

I think I just added a few boxcars to my must have list

The PRR had more X31-family boxcars than many railroads had Total boxcars. And then there were the 29,000 X29 boxcars. Gives you some sense of the scale of the PRR.

While not quite as high of numbers the X31f was a decent number- enough to have at least on on your roster.  Tichy makes decals for them too.  And as mentioned earlier I offer a roof conversion to make an X31f, in addition I offer the proper PRR truck class, 2D-F12 too: :

Alot of truth to that, someone (I would guess Al Kalmbach/Boomer Pete) once said "everyone models the PRR"

Very nice work! and very tempting, but with six x29, two x26, and potentially a few x31a/b/c cars, how many more PRR boxcars can a Soo Line / Milwaukee Road modeler justify? 

* Not to mention the x23 I'm planning to scratchbuild, did I mention I'm not really a fan of the PRR?
