So all I did was rename and save this file on my computer and uploaded it to the gallery.

From what I can tell, it's good.  There may be an issue with the phone and how it saves image info.

I had a Wordpress website for the PRR.  I don't use it anymore.  I've moved my Wordpress instance over for my business, so whatever's still out there is static.  Hosting the photos the old fashioned way on a static page is such an a$$-pain.  We have this great gallery opportunity here but I just can't understand why I'm having problems when I see other photos shared through the gallery that clearly have a fuller dynamic color range.  I cannot possibly be the only iPhone 8 guy here.  No way.

Dave .. it appears to be a combination of things . there is a library called GD -- it does a bunch of stuff to images, including striping out some paramaters that control color and such .. unfortunately, it doesn't put the info back in after it resizes ..  I saw some references online that software would have to write the data back .. I don't believe the Gallery SW does that ..

OK, I tried that.  And got the flattened colors.

Then I tried taking the original and renaming it and uploading it.  Equally flat.

This isn't making any sense at all.  None.  I confess to not knowing all the ins and outs of the image processing world, but how is it possible that you could take my dull, compressed photo and recover the original color palette?  That really makes no sense whatsoever.

Fair enough, but is everyone else experiencing this too?  It doesn't appear so.  And my iPhone has no problems uploading to other platforms and maintaining the color palette.

hey Dave

are you uploading directly from your camera/phone?
or is there a software or app you're using to go from source to image to upload?

thanks

Uploading from phone OR more commonly airdropping from phone to Mac then upload.  There's no intermediary software being used.

Now this is a photo I took with a DSLR.  Color looks okay although the resolution's shot to hell:

I haven't done that.  I took your good image hosted off-site, renamed and saved it to my computer and uploaded it to the gallery and it was still okay.  I may have done the same for the attachment I tried that saved the color.

My wife has an Iphone XS, maybe  I can replicate what's going on.

I misunderstood, sorry!  OK, so I tried saving one of my good images from Facebook and renaming it then uploading it to the gallery.  No surprises there...same dull flat colors.

So, I took the good image I'd hotlinked to from Facebook here in this thread, saved it off, and uploaded it to the gallery, and this time it kept the colors.

So I was able to reproduce your results.

I wonder if @tom mann has any insight.  If I want to get my colors right, this'll be a very clunky workaround.  It can be done, but it may mean I'll be sharing less of my work if it's the only way.

I don’t see what all the fuss is about. The era you’re modeling was mostly black & white photography after all.

Now for serious comment... great photos.

Thanks!  And...you do make a good point even if you're kidding.  After all, if I really want to show how close to the RGS prototype something is, it would only be fair to show most of my photos in B&W.

Hmmm....

This is a color space issue. Depending upon where and how the file is resized and saved, it could be missing an embedded color profile, or the original intended color profile is changed. This guy actually explains it really well:
