I have measured some extra braces that I cut and they are 5mm in length. The top piece is 3mm. I will take off the plate and measure them for close but not binding fit this evening.

Do you recall the approx. length you made the braces ?

I sure don't remember that.  I think you are over-worrying about this.  I would just hold a piece of styrene between the two bearings, mark with a fine line sharpie, then cut the strip of styrene.  After that, just hold it between the bearing backs and if it "just fits" with a bit of play, that's a good length.  If it's too tight, just file a little off until it does.
This doesn't have to be any more precise than that.  As long as the braces are long enough so that the bearings cannot possibly fall inward, and so there is a little side-to-side wiggle when they are installed, that's all there is to it.
