They are desperate to raise stock prices. The 20% across the board layoff of both contractors (me) and employees in March and April was the last gasp of the previous CEO. When that didn't work he resigned early and this new one took over. Now they are dumping any "non-core" business trying to get stockholders and investors to push up the price on stock. Transportation made them boatloads (and trainloads) of money in the past years but now they can't see paste current downturn.
If they had more realistic profit forecasts they wouldn't be in this bind. But the corporate fetish with ever increasing profits every quarter, there's no way the can get there from here. And selling core businesses to keep the investment arm (which is where they think their profits are) won't solve the problem in the long run. Another fine American company sunk by shortsighted thinking.
