I personally think your plan to cover this riverbed with olive- or tan-tinted Magic Water will work just fine.
Many of the smaller river and stream bottoms here in the East develop a green algae coating as the summer wears on. This tint is just visible through the brownish water...

I agree, the Ohio river gets a greenish tint to it because of the dirt suspended in the water after a rain. One small creek that runs near my grandparents home had a orange / rust color to it, because of the minerals in the water. I think once you've added the actual resin water to the river bed, it will resemble a lot of creeks and streams in the Allegheny / Appalachian mountain region.
