Yeah, lots of steam on the GN in 1967.

Kind of a neat accessory, though, stuff like this does fascinate the casual visitor.

Friend has a HO one. Remarked that it causes older modelers to have to excuse themselves and head to the boys room.

It may sound odd, but a lot of steam era water towers survived, although mostly the steel ones.  In many cases they also supplied fire fighting water for roundhouses, shops, and other nearby railroad buildings.

I doubt that many of the GN's would have gotten the BSB herald, though, because it was only used for three years, before the BN took over.

How often were railroad heralds even put on water tanks?

The obvious example I can think of is the D&RGW...but that's the only one I can think of off the top of my head.

Dave:  In steam days, when water towers were regularly maintained, it wasn't uncommon to have the road's name or herald on them.  Free advertising, and back then railroads did advertise to the general public.  Today, surviving towers usually get a coat of whatever paint's handy, when needed, to keep them from rusting or rotting to the point that they fail.  Beyond that, most roads don't seem to worry about their appearance.
