Well, based largely on this thread and the multiple good performance reports as well as my lack of small switchers and attraction to Alco, I broke down and ordered the Western Maryland version. The performance IS all that it's cracked up to be. Quiet, smooth at all speeds, with outstanding start/ stop, creep, and slow running capability. And decent appearance. I'm quite pleased.
