The square number board.. the long bell rope with the slack in it.   Wow.

Loren,

I congratulate you on two exceptionally beautiful engines.  The fit and parts are all crisp, the paint and weathering are wonderful.
You did a fantastic job!
And I would be remiss without congratulating Jason as well.  He provided some terrific shell and frame parts to make this possible.


Jason did the tender shell casting, but where did the tender frame and trucks come from?

You guys are really giving me a complex - but thank you from the bottom of my heart.

The drifting valves are made from solid styrene rod (I used Slaters black rod bought at a plastic model hobby shop, but white Evergreen rod is just as good, or even brass rod if preferred) and simply glued them to the tops of the cylinders. I then blended them in with 15 minute epoxy and added .010" brass wire piping to the outside.

The working stack cap extensions really tested my skills. I was going to make them from brass tubing and solder the hinges together but decided I wasn't up to that. So I cut them from K&S aluminum tubing instead and used a No. 11 X-acto blade to cut slots to receive the hinges. These were made from the shortest handrail stanchions in Gold Medal Models' No. 160-42 Steam Locomotive Detail Parts. They were secured to the aluminum tubes with gap-filling CA glue. I installed one stanchion to the real center of the upper half and two to the lower half with the single one being sandwiched between the other two. The hinge pin is a VERY short length of .008" brass wire secured in place with a minute droplet of gap-filling CA glue on each end to prevent it from wicking into the joint and locking it. The most demanding part of the job was getting the mating edges of the upper and lower halves to perfectly align when in the raised position. I ended up estimating the shape of the upper half because I couldn't find any photos or drawings of them in the raised position.

Because they aren't soldered, they are relatively delicate and have to be handled carefully, but they do work. They'll remain in the lowered (and well-protected) position most of the time like the prototype.

Which issue was this, I'll try to dig one up on ebay or somewhere.  As an SP modeler, I'd be interested in your article for sure.

The Los Angeles Union Passenger Terminal (Union Station) article appeared in the July/August 2010 issue of N-Scale magazine on pages 51 through 57. There are 18 photos showing several construction stages, interior shots, butterfly shelters, and after-dark views of it showing it's LED lighting.

Loren, those are beautiful. The only nit I could pick was the size of the handrails but I started looking at photos and those things had huge handrails in real life. As max mentioned, the pull rope allong the top sets it off. That is a detail rarely modeled in N.

One reason Baldwin handrails were fairly beefy is that they also served as conduits for electrical wires to the headlights and number boards. I really wanted to use .008" dia. wire but felt they would be too vulnerable to deformation whenever I had to grip the shell to pull it off the chassis for maintenance, or just for everyday handling, so I opted for.012" dia. wire for strength.
