Cessna 172 in N scale

If you don't mind remakes, I'd like to see a non-wood model of the DHC-2 Beaver.  I wasn't happy with the outcome of my Osborn kit build.

I know N scale vehicles are popular but what about scale private aircraft, as opposed to military or airliners? I'm working on the decals for a Shapeways Cessna 172 and will release them RTR, that is if model Railroaders ever have airplanes on their layout.

If you plan on selling these as RTR and they are expensive from SW to begin with, what kind of price can we expect? Are you going to also offer them as kits?

With all you have to do, when do you have time to finish tiny aircraft, especially if you get a bunch of orders like one of David's products?

Its nice to hear this from someone who truly "gets it" when it comes to hands on production, Jimmo, thanks. 

The truth is I won't be doing a bunch of them but I wanted a couple and as long as I'm doing decals, and since there isn't anything this fine on the market I thought I'd throw the idea out there. For me the hardest part is making the decals especially the ones that have to lay over a compound curve and land correctly viewing from the top and sides. I truly love the feel of these planes and although they are FUD they are thick enough you don't have to worry about them breaking in your hands. And when a couple of coats of primer has been applied the whole thing feels like plastic injected.

So if the labor in decals is considered, the SW cost and shipping considered, I may as well put the primer and decals on myself rather than try to explain it and the buyer have a decal fail rate. I've got the process down pretty good. Does that make sense? A friend of mine designed them, not me. So giving me suggestions of different products won't "fly" but I can try asking him. Oh, and they come in 1 piece, not kit.

As far as completing work for David, that is not a time consuming job after the initial masters so unless he makes new product I am not bogged down. Once in awhile I have to replenish lasered parts for him but the burden is on his shoulders to fulfill big orders. Now, I have my plate full with my own projects so yes, this is extra work.

If you were to buy one plane from Shapeways the cost + shipping would run you about $23.  But if you wanted it RTR you have to consider the decals and labor. I have ordered 4 more 172s with one other item so the shipping is spread out better. The ones I finish won't go on my site, I'll either sell them to those here who have expressed an interest or put them on ebay in my store there. Again, I'm not doing a production run on them or anything. I'll just do them while they are still fun to do and I have the time.

Wow, it still sounds like a lot of work on your behalf.

What I meant by "kit" was just a raw FUD rendering that one would have to do all the labor that you are offering to do. I guess what I'm asking is, are these going to be only available through you or is there going to be a Shapeways store?

Speaking of aircraft, I'm working on a twin Beech in N-scale that will be offered as a resin kit. I don't have a release date yet as I'm still working out production issues. But it's nice to see some private aircraft being offered in N-scale, even if it's on a limited basis.

"Technically", Sky King flew a Cessna 310B which had a straight vertical stabilizer and augmentor tubes over the wing. The swept-back stab did not debut until the D model.

Definitely want to purchase one of the mighty 310Q.  Aside from the time and financial loss, if your making a Bonanza, how about a Baron? same fuselage 33/55 36/58?  Not really practical.

Would there be any chance for an early C172,  like a C172/C172A, an A35 bonanza, or Stinson 108b?
