Very nice rural shack and fence - any idea on how it was done?

It's actually an outhouse (white metal, I think) with some random cedar shingles.

The fence is just some scrap stained stripwood (maybe HO 3"x4"?) planted at 8' intervals and then strung with fine black E-Z Line.

This week I planted trellis posts and strung the wire for Lush Vineyard on the Shoo-Fly module:

Also started experimenting with various fine ground foams & wire twists for the vines (see in background).
That will be a long fun planting as well.

Finally finished a two-part video on how to scratchbuild a simple "wood-n" shed plank by plank:

The shed is nothing amazing but hope the video might help take the mystery out of scratchbuilding with stripwood.

Well, my weekend had its interesting points...
I attended the Conrail BBQ and had some mindblowingly good burgers.
(sorry to whoever i never got a chance to say hello to, but i guess those playground shenanigans had more precedent...  )
I also took the NJS T-Trak layout to a small train show in Brooklawn, NJ. Ran trains, and found out that there is something more seriously wrong with my Graham Farish BR Class 04 than just mashed up contacts (which i replaced... no help) which didn't run...

At $18 a pop, I'm betting a cheaper route is in store.  MC keep your project coming.  I'd like see your ideas fleshed out.  My layout of the future is going to be the NWP/CFNR through a lot of vineyards, so I'm always brain scratching on how to do those.

Mark, you're a quick study with the weathering, and now you're on a tear. The C&W is reaching a seldom-realized level of completion for such a complex layout - in an impressively short span of time I might add.

My weekend was consumed with the CRHS Rail-B-Q, and a trip to the Rockhill Trolley Museum.

Figured out the F-unit fueltanks for my F-unit build. 1 down, several more to go...




Also am putting together about 6 kit cars. a PRR PS2 3bay covered hopper, PRR airslide, UP box, GATX tank, SSW box, and a CNW box.

I really appreciated everyone’s comments this week about the water I had added to my rivers. I always marvel at the work done by all of you – and it’s hard to describe the feeling when many of you offer compliments on my work. It truly validates that all of the hours I have spent on my layout were hours well spent!

Bart, I'll chime in with everyone else here- that's easily some of the best modeled water I've seen, well done 

She's a real beauty, can't wait to see it lumbering through the prairie with a string of 40' grain door box cars!

MC, those fences look great, like everything else you do. You should stop hoarding all that talent on the west coast and let some of us catch up
Seriously though, thanks for the how-to video. I'll have to try some of those fences when I get to that part of scenery on my layout.

Bart - I concur with everyone, that water is outstanding!

Even though it's Monday, I've been working on a totally custom job for a friend of mine this weekend.  A Colorado & Wyoming GP7 for his Pueblo steel mill on his layout.  This was also my first experience with custom made decals, I found out the hard way that using enough Micro Sol to get the homemade film to settle into the doors on the hood will also start to distort the decal and make the ink bleed underneath.  Next step is some weathering.

Spent the weekend building this...

The helix represents the "western slope" of the Alleghenies west of Gallitzin. My layout is single level, but Gallitzin sits 9" above Altoona. From Altoona it's a 49 foot long climb west up the eastern slope to Gallitzin. The grade is about 1.5%.

The helix brings the mainline back down to 0". It's another 49 feet of mainline at 1.5% with Gallitzin at the top and  Spruce Creek at the bottom.

[Day One]

It's been a while since I've done anything with my own trains. Most of my stuff is packed up as I search for a new house to buy that will include more layout space. I finally broke down and pulled some stuff out to weather a few cars. 5 down, 400 to go!

weather with chalks. This was the first car I did this weekend and most of the weathering disappeared when I sealed it with dulcote. I quickly learned to over do it on the cars before sealing it.


Not bad. Not great. It'll blend in nicely with a full train some day.
