Wonderful work! Have you tried eliminating the last far-focus slices from the stack? Or perhaps some of the close-focus slices also. Or both sides. That sometimes clears up the artifacts.
If you really want to confuse Helicon, try a 3/4th view of a ship with lots of railings. It will give you a migraine. I reverted to my 12mm at f/22, which hyper-focuses from about 3 inches to 3 feet (or also about 6 inches to infinity).
I think Helicon works best with normal length lenses or longer. When I got down to 12 mm (18mm film equivalent), I found that only three or four slices worked best. I believe Helicon works by choosing the "smallest" pixels from any particular location in an image, figuring that "bloom" is out of focus. And it tries to do some scaling as the entire image changes size as focus shifts.
I was pleasantly surprised when this piece of software came out. It's fairly inexpensive, and works well.
