Microsoft Access database- actually two separate relational databases.
One for locos and rolling stock; another for all the other stuff like structures, details, vehicles, and track.

Wow, a full bore relational database. Got a schema?

I keep inventory in a dBase database.  It's pretty exact for locomotives and rolling stock, but rather vague for track, structures, and automobiles.  Anyone keep an inventory of supplies [track, ballast, foam, etc.] on hand?

naw ... i find this type of stuff is just to hard to keep up with

I use a full-blown database I purpose built on my website:

This way I can track what I have/need when I'm at shows or on the road (its come in handy a couple of times at Chuck's shop). It only houses my Micro-Trains, Atzec and collector cars now, but I did have up there ALL of my stuff some time ago. After awhile, i decided there was just no need to keep track of EVERYTHING.

I have an even better inventory control setup. I just tell chuck to send me whatever he thinks I need

For those using Excel that are interested in a front end (interface) like Bob is showing, Microsoft Excel has everything you need in the form of VBA (Visual Basic for Applications).  Just look under 'Tools-Macro-Visual Basic Editor.

You could probably find a used book on VBA for excel and if you know anything about object oriented programming, you'll pick it up no problem.  There are on-line resources for this too.

I need something far less time-information intensive. Typing isn't my strong suit anyway, and I'd rather just have a "record". Oh well...I'll find something.

I set up a roster on our web site.  It really paid off with my insurance company once when I had some equipment in our van when it was stolen.  The insurance company loved it since they could access the web site directly.
