How does everyone keep track of their cars, rolling stock, engines, etc?  What do you prefer, spread sheet, softaware, memory, or do you throw you hands in the air at how much stuff you have accumilated!

I keep lists (one for cars and one for locos) in WordPerfect. Oh, I've got QuattroPro and Excel, but I started these lists many years ago on my office computer.

I use excel.  I had to import an old MSWorks Database... can't remember how I did it, but it must have worked.

I have separate sheets for freight cars, locomotives, and non-revenue (cabooses, MOW etc.)

Excel for me too.  I have a separate sheet for Engines, Hoppers, Coal, Intermodal, Boxcars, and Misc.  Makes it easy to find a car to make sure it's not a duplicate.

I shouldn't have added that last sheet that provides a running total of everything though... ::)

As for inventory CONTROL, I have no idea what that is.....  :P

Microsoft Access database- actually two separate relational databases.
One for locos and rolling stock; another for all the other stuff like structures, details, vehicles, and track.

Excel for locos , mainly for assigning future numbers .

Photos for both locos and cars

Keep backups on disk . I do quarterly full disk backups on all my photos , excel's , and link's , but weekly I copy a new entries photo file to disk before I subdivide the photos into their proper photo files . This way if the computer crashes , all that's lost is a week or less info . Started this temp disk last month when the old tower started to toss its chips . Live and learn .  ;) Now I am much more protected for the new tower to fail . :)

I also put every file on its own CD , so no one disk is risking everything . About 75 or 85 CD's . Once when I put multi photo files on a CD it evaporated all the text , and renamed the photos " picture 001 , picture 002 , etc . " Made me mad as a boiled owl loosing all that info .

Too much documentation becomes a burdensome task , that costs too much modeling time . Been there , done that . :P

Excel.  But now I understand where the name TrainCat comes from, I always wondered what it had to do with cats.

I keep inventory in a dBase database.  It's pretty exact for locomotives and rolling stock, but rather vague for track, structures, and automobiles.  Anyone keep an inventory of supplies [track, ballast, foam, etc.] on hand?
