I actually quite enjoy ballasting. Here's what I'd done circa 1998. Images by Lou Sassi.

More recently, I got creative with a diorama; here's a somewhat unkempt loco shop with a big EPA violation on the ground outside the shop door...

Get one of these tools. I swear to god, these are a whole lot easier to use than a paint brush. For one 1’ x 4’ module of mine with double track, it took me maybe 20 minutes tops to apply, shape and form the ballast. https://www.menards.com/main/paint/paint-sprayers-applicators/pad-painters/quick-solutions-trade-4-pad-edger/991828410/p-1552890791094.htm

My enjoyment of Ballasting only came about after started using real rock material like the stuff from Arizona Rock and Mineral.
Lot less headaches when the stuff is uniform and fine enough that it doesn't pile into weird shapes.
And most importantly will not float away and ruin the work done previously.

It’s been a while for me but I always enjoyed the almost meditative feeling of ballasting. This shot was the one track yard, main track, and industry track on my previous layout.

OMG, that looks so life-like!  You have the eye for colors and textures.  Are you sure you didn't Photoshop a photo of 1:1 scale track going through the woods?   :D  You Sir, are an artist!

I quit looking at the ballast about 2 seconds in, and starting gushing over the right-of-way, treelines, and deadfall debris on the ground.

I'm not a huge fan of ballasting either.  The main part I have left to finish on my layout is the yard . . .  :)

I used Highball real rock ballast.
