Geez , I thought it was just pose-able . You could fill up a tender with coal with that thing . They do that now a days on excursions as there is no coaling infrastructure left alive . David K Backhoesmith rocks the quarry again .

Decided to play with photoshop. I'll use these as "filler" until I can build the actual models.

No train projects per se, but I finally got to removing all the tape residue from packing my display case so I'll pick up some wall anchors when I get my lumber.  After the case gets positioned, I can start picking spots for my various train pictures.  Then comes a couple lanterns and I'll have a real train room again.  The proposed layout will fit nicely along three different walls and I'll try to budget in a new flat screen TV and a comfy chair.

In the 3D world, I got the green light that my NE5 caboose drawing look to be A-OK, so a little touchup on those and maybe I'll have a caboose by the end of Jan.  :D

Was blucky to spend yesterday with some of the crhs crew, including the legendary John C Durant.

Today I finished up a bunch of details on the chemical company on the onetrak module in prep for setup on Wednesday.

Yup.  Posted pics a couple of weeks ago on the scratchbuilt thread.  Will definitely finish the six I need next year.

I started on a critter project of my own.

This months RMC had an article about scratchbuilding the Buffalo Creek
and Gauley railbus A in HO. It is a project I have wanted to do in N
for a while and this kickstarted me into gear.

The gearbox - a collection of gears pirated from a Faulhaber 141:1
gearbox, a ZipZap equivilant motor, and wheels from the trailing
truck of a MP Pacific.

Mocked up with a Bachmann tender truck in place of the front
truck I need to build. This was just to prove to myself that
it could move itself around the layout, and it did, all be it
a little fast. I may need to add another reduction stage to
the gear box or try a 6V motor instead of the 1.5v.

Excavator is off the chain!  8)

How do the arm pieces return to their extended state? Spring somewhere?

I've been messing around with a Kato Maxi-IV set:

The main improvements are 1) etched metal walkways hacked out of some Gold Medal detail sets, 2) MT truck/couplers and FVM wheels under the end platforms, and 3) some basic weathering.  Here's a close-up of the new end detail compared to a stock model in back:

Cheers,
Gary

Great stuff Gary. How did you go with the conversion to the MTL bogie? Did you change the articulated bogies too?

Your colors look spot on too - can you give us a breakdown of what you've done?

The etched details look great too - maybe we should talk to someone about a detail kit?
Actually, just makes me wish for the DeLuxe model to hit the shelves....

Main boom lowers by gravity; the other two movements are controlled by thread pairs, one for each direction of travel. The threads are all under slight tension at all times.

Have you thought anymore about the Zn2 debacle?

The "Zn2 debacle"? You mean deciding what railroad to model? Still trying to decide. Totally torn between a Maine two-footer and an East Broad Top-like line.

P.S. Your avatar is really, really sick.

I like it.

This is awesome! Are you limited in turning the whole assembly or can it do a full 360 degree turn? Regardless, amazing. Now all you need is a hook on the bottom of the bucket and you can do some craning with it.

Thanks! I am not limited in rotation; I can easily turn a good 600 degrees or more. The only limitation is that turning too many full circles will twist the lines to the point that nothing will work.

I am thinking about making another one and replacing the bucket with a grapple of some sort.
