All is not lost though, he made an offer I couldn't refuse, and we spent a good portion of this past winter carefully dismantling the layout. It is currently piled in my basement and spilling out into the garage. I've got some improvements to do in the basement before layout reconstruction can begin, but resurrection should start this winter sometime.
It's not what I'd build if I was starting from scratch, but the design concept warrants it's time to shine and I've got enough years left to build other layouts in the future. 
I can empathize with Rich as I am frequently lose interest one the design challenges are over.
I am curious about how you plan to reuse the layout. Can you post a track plan?
This .bmp should give you an idea of the rearranging necessary on the straight peninsula. Luckily the intact portion of the layout shown here is the meat of the layout. The peninsula that doesn't fit was mostly to gain elevation with the track looping back on itse;f several times. So, I have a couple options on how to redo that, but haven't decided on which route to go yet. First step is resetting Williamson as there's only one place for it to go, and I need to lose 7" out of the middle of it.
