I keep scanning and uploading old photos to my RailImages site, so I'll start the topic this week with a few from the first batch uploaded:

"Did he ever return?" (Charlie)  ;D  Boston MTA 5709 on April 12, 1956

Chicago-bound local leaves the Milwaukee CNS&M terminal in June 1959

Crossing the Mall on conduit-powered track, D.C. Transit 1243 on April 12, 1957

Bi-State Transit (St. Louis) 1795 on the Hodiamont line on April 18, 1964

Atlantic City Brilliner 270 on August 10, 1955

CNS&M Electroliner looks odd in the middle of a Milwaukee street in June 1959.

Montreal Tramways Commission "Golden Chariot" and two-man car on August 5, 1956

Might get into some steam next week.

I haven't been out railfanning for a while now, so I'll just post a freight car of interest I've shot recently.

This is CR 589004, an ex-NW gon. CR acquired at least 53 of these cars. Some, in CR tradition, had the NW hastily painted out and new reporting marks applied directly over them; some of these also had brown patches applied on certain spots of the car. Some seem to have been repainted black and some made it into oxide red. This is of the first type I described, shot in a slab train at last year's Railwire Meet at Horseshoe:

Fairly simple and straightforward. However, I shot the car again last time I was out railfanning. It has had some interesting modifications...

It's had the old reporting mark, including all traces of the NW heritage, painted out. It's also had other random bits of small grafitti painted out. Moron markings were attached, so it was obviously a fairly recent job. So that means it got cycled through the car shop and NS didn't bother to renumber it. This is very odd, as I was shooting renumbered gons as early as the summer of 1999. I guess it must have been sent to Hollidaysburg... ;D

Caught this westbound UP train at the Vegas depot last year, near the end of the summer...when temps at night were still in the upper 80's at night.

i have come to the conclusion that car watching is probably the only place left in railfanning that offers diversity.  the leasers are starting to fade off and run thru power is common place and since there are only a handful of Class 1's left, the hodge podge of paint on the cars is a breathe of fresh air.  back in 99 when the leasers were hitting CSX like a fat kid on a glazed donut, things were groovy, but now that CSX has more branded power, things are getting blah.  at least there are 12 different variations of the CSX schemes...

the one thing i have taken an interest in is the age of the freight car fleet - the oldest car i have seen in non-captive service was 1961 on a covered hopper.

Saw me a GP38 in CR colours.  Not very common around here, mostly old high short hood Southern stuff.

Is that an airplane trail over head, or did Fluffy help you out in the dark room?
