New Haven 36' boxcar. I will put some Atlas reefer 40 ton trucks under it.

Some steps on the roof, but that was to be expected. Would be nice if I could switch the layer heights mid print. You know use .05mm layers till I hit the roof then switch to .02mm. Guess I'll do the whole thing in .02mm with the blur and see how it looks.

You beat me to that boxcar. It and the rebuilt version has been on my "one day" list.  On my Southern boxcar that's similar, I had to make the roof a separate piece so that I could print it at a different angle. It looked 100% better after that.

Did the rebuilt car about 20 years ago using Redball ends made on a Linotype machine from Gregg Mahlkov (3rd Rail) and a MDC boxcar

So trying to learn textures in Sketchup. I don't think it means what I want to do.

I have a farm with a barn on the layout. I want the lower part of the barn to be a stacked field stone wall with insets for windows and a door. I drew up the basic shape.

The windows will insert from the rear. My theme music:

When I download a "texture" is ends up just being a JPG that gets pasted to my wall. There is no texture at all. What am I doing wrong? What is the correct term for texture?

I have resin walls that I can use, but it would take a few hours to cut them out and leave me in a huge pile of dust. I want to learn how to do this in 3D (with Sketchup).

It looks to me that the vertical Z bar on the ends isn't thick enough. It should be substantially thicker than the diagonal bracing and it really effects how the end of the car looks.

Curse you all for making me do actual modeling  :D

The resin walls were about 1/4" thick so I sliced them down to about .030" thick using a mini table saw. Then I notched out the openings with a cut off wheel.

Cutting that stuff was way worse than any 3D printing  :scared:  Gotta go blow my nose...

That is some good "manual" modeling you've got there Chris!  Just like in the old days when you did some amazing stuff without any help from the silicon beast (aka computer).  It wasn't all that long ago.  :)

Can't 3D print paint  :P

I printed the boxcar at .02mm layers and the roof is much better. In person you can barely see these lines. On the right is the old one at .05mm layers. This is only the roof all sides look normal.

Another day another print   :P

Turns out the brass model and drawings still didn't show what actual photos did and I was able to change a few rivets here and there. This is just a first print to see how it looks and what I should change. The supports are still on because the ones going up into the windows ended up touching the inside of the body. No worries as this is just a test.

Only thing I'm unhappy with is where the rear roof ends. It curves in 3 different directions and Sketchup absolutely sucks.  :|

EDIT guess some may not know what I'm trying to model so:

That’s pretty sick bro. Fairly certain @Ed Kapuscinski may need a minute …

Wait, Chris, are you actually doing the MA&PA? Or just something heavily MA&PA inspired?

I'm not modeling the MA&PA, but I'm modeling the MA&PA Doodlebug #62.

Ok, that's what I thought. I was just seeing lots of MPA influence.

Are you planning on releasing the STL file for it?
