Need help remapping a ESU Loksound5 function key

I just received an Atlas N-Scale GP39-2 that has an ESU Loksound 5 decoder in it. This is the only ESU decoder I have.

I am guessing it may be a V5 Micro decoder that ESU shows as being made for Atlas locomotives. Atlas is not very specific about this in their documentation. I have contacted them to see if they can provide the exact model decoder that is used.

I downloaded some of the manuals from ESU for it and my brain hurts after skimming it! Way too complicated for my simple brain!

I want to remap F3 to play a short horn like all of my other sound decoders.

Can anyone explain what I would need to do? I am using a Digitrax Zephyr command station and also have a DT402 throttle I can use. I am not interested in purchasing or using anything else to do this since this is my only ESU decoder.

I'll have to chew on this a bit more, but I believe the sound file itself would need to have a short horn in it somewhere for this to work. I think I may have seen a short horn in an ESU sound file before and not in others but can't say for sure.

It's just really annoying when I do the usual buttons for my grade crossing horns and get a Coupler Sound when I hit F3.

Yeah, ESU decoders definitely don't have a grade crossing horn sequence that will play. The manually-playable horn in ESU decoders is set up on F2, which is typically the only non-latching function key on most controllers.

If you use JMRI thats the easiest way to change CVs. Its how I changed all my ESU sound decoders (mostly Atlas BTW). Also go to ESUs website look under LokSound 5 sound files and lookup Atlas GP39 soundfiles. A ton of very useful and easy to understand info. Download the files "Bulletin"which has all the CV info you may need. That info and JMRI makes changing ESU functions very managable.

Sounds like I just have to get used to the "playable" horn using F2. Play some long notes, and a short note, and one more long note. I can do it! With the occasional coupler sound when I instinctively go for F3!

I don't have access to LokProgrammer handy, but I believe that you can simply disable F3 with just a single (or maybe 3) manual CV writes.  That way you won't hear the coupler clang.
I also suspect that someone could create a custom grade crossing horn function that could be assigned to any F key, but that is beyond my skill level and besides, you would have to upload the modified sound project to the decoder.
