So, here's what happens with that ATC pickup shoe. Entering the turnout, no problems yet -



But then, here comes the converging rail (I don't know the technical name for it) and BAM, instant derail -



And no one tested this?????

A small rectangular shape of heavy gauge aluminum foil from a disposable roasting or baking pan from a dollar store might do the trick (although it is slightly thinner than the said gauge).  The bottom line I guess is whether the offending part extends lower than the top of the rail.  Nothing in a model (or 1:1 vehicles) should extend below the top of the rail (for obvious reasons).

Or even better, a discarded pull-top lid from a can of nuts or similar (as it is thicker than the foil I mentioned above) would be even closer to the thickens of that MTL gauge.

Since it is hitting the cross rail and tipping over, I would say that yes, it extends below the top of the rail. I don't need any fancy measuring devices to determine that 

It's so low that you can actually see it bending inward as it hits the rail in that second photo (as opposed to just skipping over it). On my first example (since returned), that shoe broke off entirely when it hit a rail. Although oddly enough, that didn't solve the problem. Even without the shoe, it still had problems getting hung up through turnouts, so that whole front C&NW truck appears to be problematic.

I checked the photos on another browser and this would not fly in model and in 1:1 world.  Anybody who bought that roadname unit will have the same problem unless the trim the offending piece and whatever else is causing problems.

Had an Atlas O gauge engine this morning do the same thing. Just with brake shoes that slipped under the wheel and caused it to die on Lionel turnouts. Makes you wonder why nobody sticks turnouts on their factory test tracks.

For what it's worth, here is my CNW unit with the gauge.  It was hard to capture, but it doesn't clear the gauge.  I have been able to run mine fairly well, but I did notice the ATS shoe runs right over the top of my turnout rails.

I wouldn't know how to take a picture like that and guarantee that it reflects reality. At this scale, even the slightest up or down angle could drastically affect the end result.
