The Atlas C424s are starting to appear as available online.

Has anyone laid eyes on one and, if so, what were your impressions?

I got an email from Lombard Hobbies that they had arrived. I now have 4 awaiting shipment.  They are the Silver versions since I am an ESU shop and the Gold in this case are Soundtraxx decoders.  Once they arrive I will see if the ESU Nano with the Next18 adapter fit or if it will take a hard-wired installation.

I have one unit on the way from Lombard Hobbies also. Looking forward to its arrival.

Yes.  Three numbers in both Silver and Gold versions.

https://archive.atlasrr.com/NLoco/arc-nc424.htm

Silver Item#    Road Name                                     Road Number    Gold Item#
40 006 104    Erie Lackawanna (Grey/Maroon/Yellow)    2405    40 006 121
40 006 105    Erie Lackawanna (Grey/Maroon/Yellow)    2407    40 006 122
40 006 106    Erie Lackawanna (Grey/Maroon/Yellow)    2413    40 006 123

Finding them may be a problem.  I was sure Lombard had some last night, but this morning I don't see any.  They may have sold out already.  There are far fewer listings than there were last night.  Last I looked HOGTrainZ hadn't listed them yet.  I haven't checked ModelTrainStuff or TrainWorld

I'll start the required thread "drift" by expanding it. Looks like Atlas received and processed an entire container. New 7550 boxcars, 40 and 53 ft well rebuilds and some other assorted goodies have arrived at Lombard's too.

I completely missed the fact that the Gold units were Soundtraxx. Silver route for me since I use ESU.

The EL units vanished quickly...

*****. The descriptions I saw said ESU.

Glad I haven't pulled the trigger yet.

Because I've been thinking "I need to patch something" this week.

I don't think the EL's were released yet. I was on the site first thing and saw all the C424's except for the EL's. The email announcement from Lombard also showed all C424 schemes except for the EL. (see attached screenshot)

Okay. That might be what the Atlas Production Schedule page meant. The C424 are listed as "In Transit" January 25, 2026 (partial).  Usually that has meant that the Gold items were not shipped but since these are Soundtraxx, maybe they didn't have the delays often associated with ESU equipped Gold units.

Hog Trainz is showing the EL units as not released yet, this may explain the partial shipment status.

Could've sworn the same thing. Pre-ordered the RDG units with sound, but dont want SoundTraxx.

Is there any logical reason why Atlas keeps flipping between using ESU and Soundtraxx decoders in various recently released models?  Seems kind of schizo to me.

This page has always said SoundTraxx.  That's why I didn't pre-order from my guy in Cincinnati.  But I succumbed to temptation when I got the Lombard email and got the Silver because I had just bought a stash of LS5 Nano/Next 18 boards and had some extras.

The Catalog where they ere announced also clearly says SoundTraxx

Maybe you saw it in some shop's page?

Yep it's soundtracks.  Sounds good.    Old lifelike shell will not fit the mechanism without some grinding to the frame.  Front led lights are actually part of the cab assembly connected to the chassie via a wire harness.
