Trans Canadian Coupler Conference #2 wrapped up this week.  Ride the Canadian while you still can.  And if you're lucky, windstorms in the Fraser River Canyon will add a day to your trip... and daylight through the best part!

16 hours parked in Boston Bar gave us some daylight through the Fraser River Canyon.  It's a travesty that this is usually overnight into Vancouver.

When I developed the Southern Tier Lines and the Rochester Branch, I ran out of basement. That resulted in a most unfortunate scenic dilemma at the north end of Cohocton. No good way to disguise the end-of-track on the branch, and the two main industries were now just "off layout" to the north. (There were a cannery and a lumber / coal yard there back in the day.) I've been staring at the mess for a few years now.

Enter my NMRA Division's monthly "Bring n Brag" contest. This month's model-building category is agriculture / grain / feed industry. That was the spark I needed. I have abused my Modeler's License by relocating the cannery to fit at the end-of-track on my layout. Over the last 3 weeks I built a Rix Guthrie Grain Mill kit, scratch built an elevator building flat following a prototype mill nearby, and used some leftover Walthers Modulars to fab a warehouse flat (both are 1.25" deep).

Not great, but far better than it was, and now I have actual buildings to spot cars at rather than a paper sign taped to the backdrop. The second photo has a temporary commercial backdrop installed for purposes of my contest entry. It will be replaced with something more appropriate later.

Spent the day finishing the layout dismantling removal process at our club.  Salvaged the electronics today and unbolted the 6 or 7 table sections and removed the TTrak layout as well. We're working on securing a new space 4 blocks south of the current location. And it's next door to a Wendy's so Frosty 's can be enjoyed whilst operating trains. Now the refuse hauling shall commence in the meantime.

Took my Golden State out to play at a friend's layout.

Everything but one car is custom painted by me. There's one Intermountain car, which you can tell by the day glow paint scheme.

Everything but the three coaches are prototypically correct body types.

Goodbye boxing gloves, hello accumates. Converted 4 Bachmann Northeastern cabeese. Saw a post by Mark 5 about doing this. Super simple conversion. Dropped right in. Nice afternoon project.

This week’s project was an attempt at Sumner’s excellent 3D printed rotary plow. This is an accurate UP prototype and makes a close foob in Milwaukee paint.

I printed the model but didn’t have any of the drive components it was designed for yet so I rolled my own.
The brass bushing holds 1.5mm ball bearings and stainless shaft. It uses a 6mm coreless planetary gear motor in a custom mount controlled by an ESU Lokpilot decoder. It rides on Bachmann tender trucks and the tender is a stock Bachmann medium version with all wheel pickup.

I made a brass split post to make use of the tender drawbar. The plow trucks are hardwired.

Paint is Tamyia NATO black with MR Hobby clear matte for finish.
