My newly arrived Atlas U33B

I've only got one real complaint: I REALLY wanted to give this thing a gnarly patch job. But the reality is that the U33Bs typically wore their full PC dress until they were repainted in full Conrail dress. That, combined with it coming with the right radio antenna, meant that I didn't have to do JACK to it prior to weathering.

And yes, some former PC U33Bs did have a big "box" on the walkways, but Atlas wisely chose the numbers that didn't.

I still want to do some work on it. Maybe add a few rusty highlights. Definitely some oil leaks and then of course a nice sooty roof.

Overall though, I wanted to share that these are really nice out of the box. Great work Atlas.

Oh, also, it brings me so much joy just walking through this room and seeing this.

Looks good - my kinda dirt!. Maybe clean up the windows a little so the crew can see.

So where did the put (or plan to put) the speaker and the decoder spot in this one?

After my GP7 debacle it's not necessarily an assumption that the decoder goes under the radiator and the speaker in the fuel tank.....

The patch job on this unit doesn't appear to be particularly "gnarly" - just some glossier/cleaner black sections covering the PC "worms" and roadname and then the CR stencils in white.

That's a good one and generally the direction I was thinking of going in. But most of the photos I found of them showed them still with worms into the 80s. I was actually surprised.

Realizing its a joke  but a black locomotive should have browned grills rather then more blackened.

A very sexy engine tho! Love the shift back to early Conrail and some unpatched predecessors!

While I don’t have an Atlas U33B I did just recently buy a new Atlas U23B for a good price from a local AU hobby shop.  The Atlas parts diagram shows the U23B/U33B/U36B share the same mechanism.  So I would say the speaker for the U33B would be mounted on the light board as per the newer GP7/GP9 releases.
