Diamonds can drive you crazy. I made one, color printed, it was like making diamonds from coal, with 16 manual color swaps: A streamstyled Lehigh Valley 900 series car in the striking Otto Kuhler Black Diamond prewar livery.

Now, just don't ask how about motive power for this. Doing the car was already a crazy idea

Color printing is one path to the future of the hobby. If you can make a shell for the BLI pacific drive, that would something I’d gladly purchase (train and all).

Didn't someone make the steamer shell a few years ago? Robert Nunes, perhaps? I know I saw one or two on Ebay.

This night, the ghost of Otto Kuhler showed up in my dreams, and he talked to me (he spoke German, he is German born like me). He was very pleased that I was working with his railroad designs, instead of those of this arrogant and impertinent Frenchman Raymond Loewy. But he was very annoyed that I messed his Lehigh Valley Black Diamond design. I made the letterboard black instead of red. He asked me to change it, otherwise his eternal peace may be compromised.

I agreed immediately, and this morning I made a new carbody. Fortunately this is a modular design, built much like a reduced MTL heavyweight, so many parts could be swapped. The ill-fated first attempt will be primed and spray painted, old style.

I am getting old and started in N-scale in the late 1960s and can hardly believe how far the hobby has come. This car shows what is possible and it will be interesting to see if some people set up to sell special run passenger trains. I am not sure what price point would be necessary to make this work and if it is possible some already in the business could take on this facet of the business. What a wonderful job on this model.

I started in N scale about the same time as Bruce and just a few miles west of him when I spent 7 years at U of Ill in nearby Champaign-Urbana.  I have never met Bruce but our paths may well have crossed at Slot and Wing Hobbies.

I, too, am in awe of Interurban's multi-color prints.  I would love to see him do some heavyweights in Milwaukee Road orange and Black with the maroon windowband.  MT's are nice but not the paint scheme that I grew up with.

Add me to those who are amazed by your ability to do color printing at this level.  I am just beginning with 3D printing (got a low end printer for Christmas), and looking forward to being able to print simple things- like interiors and freight car loads.  It will be years (if I have enough left) before I am printing passenger cars, much less in color with striping.

I know you are doing some of this work commercially, but can you tell us what model of printer you are using to create these models?  (if it's not a 'trade secret.')

I know you are doing some of this work commercially, but can you tell us what model of printer you are using to create these models?  (if it's not a 'trade secret.')

This should work with any FDM printer, as the trick is swapping out new colors for each layer that needs them.  A fancier printer might be able to swap ~4 colors automatically, but he's doing it manually.

 Are you printing these cars on a Bambu printer???? Sure does look like it.
 I'm amazed with the print quality of both of our H2D's.
