Before I started chasing more scale sized couplers, I was also a fan of accumates and I also removed the trip pins.  On MT couplers I would cut them short.

I don't "hate" them, but, they cause problems and are just another thing ya gotta check when wanting reliably running trains on possibly substandard track like at NTRAK setups, especially when other clubs are invited to participate.

Also, with loooong trains, MTL couplers have a tendency to tip up or down when under a really heavy load.  This makes the drooping coupler's magnetic dongle too low, and it does catch on turnout frogs, grade crossing, etc.

Although the dongles fill the gap between cars on the underside of couplers, they're connected to the couplers (not the car bodies like prototype air hoses) and, if left alone, are shiny, or copper colored and are not round.  Although the "perfect" N-scale air hose hasn't been manufactured yet...y'know, one that has tiny magnets in the ends that couple together automatically when cars are coupled up, but are weak enough to easily break free when uncoupling (I think that wold be a detriment however when attempting to spot a car)...sooo, I'm pretty happy with MTL's True-Scale air hoses (not completely), and with N-Possible air hoses, although my faves are Precision Scale's and old BLMA ones.

Incidentlly, the non-dongle air hoses don't cause problems because they don't droop or work their way out of adjustment...and, they look a helluva lot better.  I prefer the brass ones, since the injection molded ones break fairly easily...but, they're a lot cheaper than brass and look just as good until they snap off.


Are all of your locos and rolling stock equipped with functional uncoupling levers?
If not, how do you accomplish uncoupling in a prototypical manner?

However, since you brought it up, I find that manually uncoupling my cars using a tool (as opposed to embedded magnets under the track) lends itself to a more realistic "feel" since I have to do it in a "hands-on" manner rather than just stopping over a magnet, even though the actual operation isn't at all like the prototype's mechanical uncoupling process.

I have no expectations to actually operate engines and trains mechanically identical to the real deal.  I'm pretty sure I'm not alone with that lack of expectation.  However, I like to make my models look as prototypical as I realistically can, which includes progressively adding details which resemble uncoupling levers, air hoses, brake wheels and other items that, on my models, serve no function whatsoever other than to be purely cosmetic.  That's why it's called "model" railroading, right?

I'll assume you're attempting to make a point.  For curiosity's sake, just what is it?

There's a tight use case where Accumates arn't half bad.  And standardizing on them can be less aggravating that utilizing a mix of compatible knuckle couplers.  They do couple smooth and pick apart easy for operations. 

They don't seem to do the draft-buff-draft thing very well though.  Get up to about the 6th or 7th RailSmith passenger car and they start bouncing apart.  I haven't had a long string of only Accumate freight cars, ever, so I don't know if the dynamics play out the same way.  But the Accumates on RailSmith have been problamatic for multiple folks on the Modutrak layout as we build-a-train with that RailSmith line expanding.

Most aspects of modeling involve compromises, to a greater or lesser extent.
I find it interesting to observe in which of those aspects a given modeler is willing to accept significant compromises and in those for which they choose to be relatively uncompromising.

I've owned MTL cars (and used their couplers) for over 50 years and found the magnetic uncoupling feature to be useful, especially when switching locations on a layout that were more than an arm's length away.
Also, in over 40 years of participation in NTRAK, I've observed that numerous show-goers seem fascinated by watching hands-free magnetic uncoupling during switching operations.

Mike:  Interesting observation about Railsmith cars.  I have a bunch of them, but have never run a solid train.  I model 1974, and the rare passenger train is based on Amtrak's Empire Builder.  Mine is a mix of Railsmith, Kato, Centralia Shops, and Brass Car Sides on CC bodies or core kits, with an equally wide mix of truck and couplers.

I wonder if, in this case, mix-and-match couplers actually are better than standardizing?

Actually, when I started out again in model railroading, I did it because of a local NTRAK club's setup at a local mall.  I joined, and I started a major re-fit of all of my newly purchased cars and engines over to Kadee N-scale couplers, which included the use of the Magne-Matic uncoupling feature, which I liked very much after over-weighting and including an axle spring on one bearing cone per car to eliminate slinky effect.

However, after being on the regular operating crew of Lee Nicolas' HO scale UCW layout, where manual uncoupling was dictated, many of my operational preferences changed, including liking manual uncoupling more than Magne-Matic uncoupling.

It's just my preference from my own experience, and there certainly is nothing "wrong" with magnetic remote uncoupling, as both you and I (and others) agree it is very handy in hard to reach areas of a layout.

After converting my entire roster of engines and cars to Kadee/MTL couplers, then replacing all of them with MTL Nn3/Z scale couplers, then starting to replace all of those with modified MTL True-Scale couplers & printed coupler pockets, I am now in the process of converting everything to N-Possible Couplers, which do not offer any sort of remote or magnetic uncoupling...which for me has no bearing on my preference since I started using manual uncoupling with an uncoupling tool in the early 1990's and N-Possibles uncouple very handily using a titanium toothpick as an uncoupling tool.

My local club ditched NTRAK for more realistic and stringent standards, including an increased railhead-to-floor height, then, disbanded after our permanent setup location became unavailable.  I developed my own modular standards, borrowing some from several different N-scale modular groups, and determined (with my grown son) a relatively high railhead-to-floor height of 52" ideally, with a +- adjustment of two inches either way to compensate for uneven floors. This height makes it much easier to see my trains close up, being a foot taller than NTRAK's 40" railhead-to-floor height, making manual uncoupling easier, and bringing industries closer to the front edge for easy access.

Since in a good year, I only participate in one or maybe two trainshows, my modular layout stays set up in my home and I work on it only for my own satisfaction.  Pleasing visitors, or onlookers at shows, is 100% irrelevant for me.

I'm not too concerned about couplers -- most of my fleet are MT and whatever comes on cars when I buy them .( and many  have never actually run on the layout). Many years ago, I replaced rapido couplers with MT Nscale ones. I never tried the Z scale couplers on N.  I also doubt I will ever convert to the imposible couplers -  nothting against any other formats, but I just can' justify the expense.  In the last 30 years, I replaced pizza cutters with Atlas lo-pros / and compatible model, then started to convert to metal wheel sets when that became the rage .. I respect those that strive for perfection, but I guess I fall into the "not serious model railroader" camp .. I just don't feel the need anymore to correct design decisions by manufacturers ..

I've always had Bad luck with Accumates, That's why I call them "Crapumates." in my experience, 1 out of every 15-10 will actually work well for more than 10 minutes. Between trip pins randomly falling off, Random Coupler explosions, drooping, and generally just saying "Naw, Not today" and letting go, I have no love loss for them, and generally replace them with MT 1015 or whatever is appropriate once they give me a headache. Long trains at shows, on NTrak, is the perfect time for them to Eff off and do their own thing, and they have quite a few times on me. Hell, I have even replaced some Kato stuff with 1015, because they were being a headache.

IMHO, even with the over sized MT, they are still way superior to Crapumates. Although I have been looking really hard at the NPossible couplers, I may start by converting some of my name trains. But that is super low priority for me.

I've found way more reliability with the nPossibles at train shows.  Even pulling in a straight line, MTL's put a sideways force into the car.  Add in the bouncing, and reliability becomes a bit of a crapshoot on when and where the issues will arise. 

I've been modular model railroading for too long now (30+ years) and I've never seen a more stable train than this standard on Code 55 track:

1) nPossible Couplers
2) Good trucks and couplers, like BLMA/Tangent, with no sloppy bolsters (2-56 screw with a PTFE tubing shoulder)
3) sar spec restraining springs (2/3 of an MTL coupler spring in one axle)
4) Watch the weight, nothing under a minimum (50ft car >32g is about where I'm at)

That gives a visible difference in stability of the train, and it ends up looking and acting more massive.  Come see at the N Scale Enthusiast in Milwaukee this month.

The only retrofits I've done are on locos and cars that came equipped with Rapido-style couplers, replacing them with Kadee/MTL couplers (and trucks).
With the hundreds of locos and thousands of cars I've accumulated over the decades, changing to anything different would be a monumental task.

In the past, I've participated in multi-club NTRAK set-ups, so I've chosen to build/maintain my modules to be as close to the standard as possible to ensure compatibility.
The only "upgrade" has been to replace the Cinch-Jones connectors with PowerPoles.
 
If your club never interoperates with any "foreign" modules, then you can tweak the NTRAK standard as you see fit.
Likewise, the standard for a home modular layout can be whatever you want.

Point353:  That's the way it is with me.  According to my spreadsheet, I have 1094 in-service freight cars.  They date from 1970 to today.  Converting them to anything else would take, literally, years, and probably more money than I can spend.  In the end, my railroad wouldn't run any better.

Interesting to see the quantities some folks have.  After 25 years I think I have about 30 cars and 4 engines that are what I would consider "what I wanna build a layout around"  Not to say my garage doesn't have plenty of overage but I have struggled to keep things in check for my own well being.  LOL  Now that I have more time, I'm looking at printing several specialty cars I want to consist that are SP specific.  Hopefully some day I can get around to building that layout and put all this to work.  Long ago I made the switch to body mount 905's because they were a bit closer to scale and worked as intended.  In the meantime, while I am still working, its interesting to live vicariously through you all.
