N scale Bachmann 2-8-0 sound died

Hello my fellow train friends, freaks and nerds.   My N scale Bachmann 2-8-0 came with sound and runs great for several years now and suddenly one day the sound went away. Still runs great but no sound at all.  Could it be a speaker issue or something in the decoder died ?   Just asking before I start messing with it or replace the sound decoder.  Thank you.   Oh and I found a local body to get my ESU decoder up to speed and correct sound I put in my Atlas TM since I do not have an ESU programer.

F8 is a prime mover mute function for the sound projects of U.S. locomotives (when the loco is in motion). When loco is stopped then F8 performs the prime mover shutdown/startup. So it has a dual functionality. 
To mute all the sounds any time they usually use F31. It is all easily remapable if one so desires.
Also good to know that you were able to find someone local  to you with a LokProgrammer.
But that's not what we are supposed to be discuss here.   

As for the problem, your guess is as good as mine.  I believe that Bachmann sound decoders are made by Soundtraxx.  It could be the speaker, broken wire, or some faulty part  on the decoder.  You could contact Bachmann if the model is still under warranty.

Try resetting the decoder by programming 8 into CV8. Other possibility is that the speaker died (not very likely as most cases you still hear some noise) or a connection to the speaker failed (bad solder joint perhaps).

Bachmann's "warranty" seems to be to just send you another locomotive.  The "replacement" loco may not be the same paint scheme, or even the same type - maybe even diesel for steam.  It depends on what stock Bachmann still has available.  That said, at least they still seem to be producing the DCCwSound version of their Spectrum 2-8-0, so you might be able to get another one of those.

Well that's a pretty crappy warranty... I'd be POed if they sent me a diesel as a replacement for my steamer!

I'll monkey around with it more. I probably already violated the warranty because I purchase from someone a PRR H10 shell and did all the mods including the tender. Running wise I changed nothing.
