Combine overhead pics to create a track plan?

I want to create an accurate track plan of my layout.   I was thinking I could take multiple shots from the ceiling straight down and then somehow combine them into a single image of the whole layout.  Has anyone tried to do that and if so, how?  All I can think of is (painful!) crop each one so the edges match up and then tile them together.

I've seen it done.  Make sure the photos are nadir- properly oriented vertically.  What you want to create is an orthophoto, there is open source software to do it.  Very common thing to do with with drone images

Thanks for the tip!  Knowing what keyword to search for is half the battle.

The secret search keyword was "orthophoto".  Got decent results from a program called SkyeBrowse, which creates 3-D models from drone videos.  Worked fine with video from my phone.  The 3-D model is interesting to move around in.  The 2Ds, attached, have watermarks which presumably would go away if I spent $.  I can create a drawing from these no problem.
