And what of well known modern n scale layouts? Aside from the Laurel Valley - which I too have numerous hoppers for - the first road that comes to mind is the Tenino Western. I know he has done decals for himself, but I don’t think he’s ever sold those. I would also LOVE some UB as well.

This is a cool thread! Neat to see all the creative endeavors. I was an HO scaler until I left for college. Growing up near the summit of the Saluda grade, I was a big fan of tuxedo clad SD45s and SD40-2s, but I was a rivet counter practically out of the box - to the point it was crippling. Knowing I was going to be an Appartement dweller in grad school, I wanted to go in an entirely different direction. I figured that If couldn’t see the rivets in N scale, I couldn’t count them and  if I came up with my own road, I’d be liberated from obsessing over accuracy. The Clinchfield was cool, and the WM was also on my radar, so I combined my favorite elements of the two and came up with the East Coal Link. I found a few sets of Microscale Railroad Roman alphabet decals in deluxe gold on sale and that looked pretty good with with leftover Southern Green I had on hand. I picked up a pair of used Kato SD45s (for $40!) sprayed the shells green, and the sills black - no masking involved!



What about rolling stock? I wanted to use stuff that was readily available. I found about a dozen Atlas 90 ton hoppers that were undeced with dimensional data and went to town with the lettering that was too large for the locos.



Even started working on an OCS.



Kinda funny how close I came to modeling the present day Reading and Northern by simply making the best of what was readily available. It was a fun endeavor while I was living in Maryland, but the layout had a number of design flaws and didn’t last very long past grad school. Not to mention that an October drive to Cumberland had completely set the hook on the WM. So the ECL flag would soon fall. The ECL’s two SD40s were repainted into WM colors, but I’m really glad I kept a few pieces from my first N scale efforts.

Now I’m back to counting the rivets but this time on WM steam 🤣 - and having a blast I might add! But if there are steam era cars available in a freelance paint scheme, I‘m happy to add them to the fleet!

Try finding an undecorated Locomotive or even rail cars as a starting point these days.

I know not many people, were fans of the MR&T. (Milwaukee, Racine & Troy.) = (Model Railroader & Trains).
That appeared in the MR magazine, but back in the late 1980's that's ALL there was.
When FVM produced a set of MRT Boxcars back in 2013, I was hoping for some decals...
So, some years later, Only one set, which was for the Engines and Cabooses was made available.
I bought half a dozen sets.  I made up a Blue 2-Bay Hopper and two Brown/White Gondolas, with those decals..
With the tear-down of the MRT layout, by Firecrown.   I decide to see what I could make out of the sets, I had left.



The boxcars on the left are the FVM offerings.
On the Right are ALL of my custom-painted units.  Those with "White" Letterings and Logos (Gon, Caboose, Hopper and Boxcar) are from the decal sets.  With the DATA from Microscale decal sets.
The Gray Hopper has decals, that I had made from scratch.
Since, I only have one Original set left, anymore addtions will have to be of a Lighter-Colored car...
