Give your speakers some balls?

/>At 3:20 of this phone teardown, they show the audio chamber is full of microscopic foam balls. This is supposed to give depth and make the sound fuller. The Apple iPhone Air does the same thing with its single speaker. I have a hard time believing both Apple and Google would do this if there was not significant improvement to the sound.

Anyone try this on sound chambers for your models?

Just like stuffing a "too small" woofer box with polyfill. Do not know of any proof it works, but was always told to do it.

All the home Hi-Fi speaker systems I have ever opened up (because I'm a curious fella) had some sort of sound damping material in the enclosure,mostly against the rear wall. Usually it looked similar to polyfill Chris mentioned, sometimes it was more like material used for cheap hot air furnace air filters (but thicker).

Not sure how that works on the microscopic scale.

Just searching now there seems to be a either stuff or line thing going on and with more dense material like rockwool or jean material insulation.

The damping material you often see in home speakers is designed to absorb the back wave from the speaker so that the back wave reflection from inside the cabinet does not create distortion or interfere with front-wave response.

The theory should be the same for the cell phone speakers we use.  Whether it is actually audible with engine sounds is TBD.

yup Ive been adding a pinky spoon of buffer to my baffles to reduce tinnyness secrets out I guess

What specifically have you been using? I've tried to look for the micro foam balls from inside the speaker enclosures but the smallest I've found it 2mm-3mm.
