Crimper for RJ12 and RJ45 plugs

Today I found 1 of the Crimpers needed to use the Passthru Ends very cheap @ a Flea Market... Various Brands have same or similar tool that properly Cut the wires as it crimp the terminals.

Note: Same is needed for Passthru 4-6 pin RJ12 for telcom service cable. This model has both but others only RJ45.

The "Bump" that is used by Tight Spec Plugs and part of the Sheer for the Crimper.

To Use put an End in the Crimper.

Put the Cable into then thru the End.

"Back Side" has a cutter and "ear" to go along with the plastic "bump" to be other half of the sheering. IOW same thing I did with the Xacto chisel above.

cycle the tool and remove the assembly to get the Result...

The Black wire was crimped by an old tool then wire ends cut with good Flush cutter. While this works in some plugs like my Router... It Won't Work in Tight Spec Plugs that uses the "Bump" as a Structural Element to make a safe connection for laptops etc.

Amp(Tyco) is 2-231652-0 just for the frame/body. (E2A--> Also sold under Black Box Tool PN FTM40 )
Side Note: Other side has a Stripper but Only for Flat cable mostly use for Phones. The Die also sets Strip Length & damage the blades by cycling the tool without a Die set.

Look @ the Dot(s) for the Die(s)... Shown are White & Black Dot Dies. (Other Dies are: Blue Dot RJ11/RJ12 for Phones, DCC & other uses. Then Green 4 pin handset, Orange & Violet 6 pin Ends never use by most.)

White Dot fits Most if not All "Generic" RJ45 ends. I think this Die came later in 2000's before Tyco/CommScope disconnected the line. So is "rare" on 2nd hand markets.
Black Dot only fits Amp/Tyco RJ45 ends (with or without extra tab used by some enterprises.) This & others are more common & more so in kits with tool & several dies.

I'm not sure if you can mod the Black Dot one to fit the Generic Ends.
The Amp RJ45 die & end has sightly different crimp areas for the contacts & strain release then add another strain release for small wires. The end is a bit bigger to fit all parts. Finding Amp ends is harder but looks like available in some places. I've still have a few left from an old job.

It works great. It uses pass-through connectors, and has a blade that cuts the wires. As long as you press the plug all of the way into the crimpers it's flush against the blade and there's no wires sticking out.

That tool is same type/model showing above cutting the wires. I got it very cheap ($2) @ flea market & didn't have time to dig thru amazon or other listings.

If starting from 0 then buying with no clue often causes crap tool that won't crimp right. I've lost count fixing cables made with many cheap crimpers. But these seems to work.

Other cheap ones often have plastic parts that flex or other problems & don't crimp properly some or all the "pins." Worse can Pass testing @ install time then Fail days to months later.

This pic is just 3 Examples of Cable Stripper for Net & Telecom work...

Top is 1 of several Thomas & Betts Cable Strippers.  Just snap the cable on & turn then pull. This version is TCS1 often sold < $3.
Next is Platinum Tool Non Adjustable Stripper. Like above snap the tool on & turn then pull.
Final is a Fluke Adjustable stripper. Open the tool, push wire thru the hole, let tool to close & turn then pull.

I mention this now because Many buy Bulk Cable @ Flea Markets etc Very Cheap & that can be any type of cable but problems are:
◼ The strippers with Non Adjustable Blades may NOT work on all Twisted Pair Cable Types. Fire Resistance "Plenum" cable is 1 because most have a Very Thin Outer Jackets. Shielded cable may not work as could cut the Jacket & Shield.
◼ Any stripper with Adjustable Blade(s) often need Adjusting every time you switch cable source. The Jacket can change dimensions enough to hit the wires, more so dealing with Shielded cable.

So ALL strippers need to check that they score or cut the Jacket & not the inner wires or Shield. If you look at the T&B blade is Damaged because someone forgot & using it with Plenum cable & hit the Copper.

I like to score the jacket very deep, not totally thru. Most jackets will pull off with little effort.

"Real" Strippers for Shielded Twisted Pair is about the same for RG59 RG6 & other Coax Cables that uses 2 blades & harder to adjust. Most here won't have STP even for Ethernet cables.
