The new company will be called Union Pacific.

Seems like a missed opportunity.  How about Southern Pacific?

Nuh uh. Not the way UP works.  :P

I was really hoping for UPNS so it'd be pronounced "Youpeenis".

Ugh. There was a day I would have said the STB would knock this down;  now I’m not so sure. Nothing good will come of this.

I’ll try to find some good in this:

1) A transcontinental railroad could increase efficiency in coast-to-coast shipping, which would better compete with other forms of transportation in the U.S.
2) My favorite part- as the Class 1s grow and abandon or sell off routes, new short lines are created and/or existing small roads grow.  The Class 1s do the long haul, and the short lines/regionals provide the customer service to the shippers.

If I ever build another layout and change the theme, it’ll definitely be a short line.  They’re much more interesting to me.

Ah, @Ed Kapuscinski, you never let me down. 🤣  Coincidence that 611 will be owned by UPNS!?  I think not.

I see what you did here.  ;) But, 611 is owned by the Virginia Museum of Transportation (Roanoke).

And the new railroad should be called Norfolk And Western:trollface:

That's not going to drive it. Mr. Buffett and Co. invest for value. If they see value in absorbing CSX, they see something I don't.

If approved, I would say that BNSF+CSX is defacto, whether they actually merge or not.

Not necessarily..

If the other class 1s wanted to strategically play this out..

My thought was BNSF+FXE/FEC and CN+CSX..
And to add salt on UPNS deal.. BNSF and CN announce both mergers in a joint presser..

So the immediate speculation would be the long term plan of CNCSX+BNSF/FXE, an spark assumptions of a future UP/NS+CPKC.

Will BNSF try and outbid UP?

From the railroad, rather than stock market, perspective, I hope this works out better than the UP-SP deal.  That one tied up much of the western US before they got operations straightened out.
