Just like to add:

The original 10 and 23 ml bottles that are typically available in most hobby shops are the alcohol based synthetic lacquers.  Can be thinned with 90% alcohol or Tamiya's thinner (which I believe has a built in retarder).  The 23ml bottles seem to be slightly harder to get these days compared to the 10ml.

The little square bottles are their enamel line and have been around for years, but only recently available in the states probably in the last 20 years or so I think.

The other 10ml bottles are their new full lacquer based line (the LP bottles).  These are full organic solvent paints and require the necessary safety precautions (like ventilation and respirator).  They have thinners as well...but I prefer to use Mr. Hobby Leveling thinner because it has a built in retarder.  I've not been able to get these paints thinned properly and they come out a little on the thick side.  In my opinion...there are better lacquer paints out there like Mr Hobby, GAIA Notes, Nazca, and KAIZO.  Much better color ranges as well.

The spray bombs are full lacquer as well and go on quite well for spray cans, but they are expensive and have very small amounts of paint.  A lot of car modelers decant these paints and use in an airbrush.

Finally...you have the spray bombs for the Poly-carbonate plastic bodies for RC cars that are designed for that very smooth plastic.

My biggest gripe with Tamiya is the color range.  It sucks...the colors are limited, inaccurate...and WAY too dark...at least in the synth acrylic line.  The newer LPs might be better...but again...the range is limited.  The colors in the spray can range are pretty good especially in the aircraft range.

Yes...the colors don't match between lines.  Tamiya being Tamiya.

Thank you!!

That actually answers the initial question perfectly.

This chart shows which colors are available in each line, and (more importantly), which lines of paints can (and cannot) be applied over the other paints.

Some of my favorite grays are missing from that chart... Ocean Grey 2, Neutral Gray.

Hope that's not a sign of discontinued colors.

@C62-2  Thanks a lot for this link. Going to add it to this color matching thread:  https://www.therailwire.net/forum/index.php?topic=37774.0

@Ed Kapuscinski , this answers your question. As to the closeness of the color match, that remains to be seen, but on paper, this list is what is claimed to match.

I should  also mention that unless someone is trying to match a color for touching up already painted model, slight variations of the shade are quite acceptable.  It is not like someone will examine your model with a original color chip in hand to critique the color accuracy.  Then there is 1:1 weathering and fading. Sometimes I think we take this exact matching thing too seriously.

I'm trying to find a good gray to use for an unspecified railroad's MOW color (it doesn't have to match any prototype, just look generally "MOW equipment gray").

I like Tamiya paints generally. But I'm perplexed that they don't seem to offer the same colors in different bottle sizes and spray cans.

I'm looking at White Rose's selection:
https://www.whiterosehobbies.com/collections/tamiya-paints

Between their 10ml brush paints:
https://www.whiterosehobbies.com/collections/tamiya-flat-acrylic-paints-10ml-bottles

23ml brush bottles:
https://www.whiterosehobbies.com/collections/tamiya-flat-acrylic-paints-23ml-bottles

Aircraft spray cans:
https://www.whiterosehobbies.com/collections/tamiya-as-model-aircraft-spray-paint-and-color-chart

And non aircraft spray cans:
https://www.whiterosehobbies.com/collections/tamiya-ts-plastic-model-spray-paint-and-color-chart

I don't see many of the same colors replicated from format to format.

Am I missing something?

Is there some sort of method to this madness?
in my civvies here.  I only represent my grandmothers home made Mac and Cheese on Railwire.

I love the Tamiya lacquer paint.

Also love Rustoleum.  I used to go through the intricate decanting process.  Now I just spray what I need into a Dixie cup for airbrushing.
