Test printing for Keystone Details restart

In my efforts to bring Keystone Details back to life, I bought a second Anycubic D2 DLP printer.

I decided to take a smattering of old and new cad models from my lineup of parts and fill the build plate with them as a start to see what I could print and what I could not. None of my tripucks just yet, that will be another test coming up.

Each printer printed the same group of parts with only two failures on the new machine can you guess which part? Lol

Here is a shot of all the test parts.



The first part to mention is a PRR yard limit sign, like OMG! I will be printing these in black when the resin comes.



Next up is a very small brick sample of standard house red brick to scale 2 1/4”H x 7 1/2”W x 4”D with scale 1/2” mortar lines. Visible but likely not workable for paint and mortar tests, but zi will try.



Next up is my trusty fill spout. I can’t believe the handle printed. 



But these H21a hopper bracing are da bomb. Blown away that the printer actually printed the thru hole used for stiffening the part. The second and third pics of them have 0.009” stainless wire thru the length of the parts. The single brace I get as it was printed at a high angle to the plate, but the end-ribbed brace was printed horizontally, wow. Never thought that possible in SLA printing.







Lastly, I thought I would try my IM 4750 body mount coupler support and install tool for body mounting 1015 MT couplers underneath, a very old design. The tool helps position a drill bit into the car’s bolster to allow the support’s pin to place the mounting surface correctly.

More test printing with the D2

Here is a revised version of the fill basin, angled this time on the build plate which allowed the basin drain grate to show, improved plank grooves and a light press assembly without glue, allowing the spigot to swing on its base as originally designed. I never thought I’d be able to print this as intended!







A copy of my Athearn tender shell. I may even try to print the entire repowering kit.



Next is my original crossing watch box, with a swinging, snap in door, and a pot belly stove! The smokestack is printed loose and glued into a hole on the roof.







Next up I am testing mob printing of my A5 switch machines that can double as an electrical switch cap for manual switching that manages frog polarity.



Next up is a test printing of my Atlas Code 80 Custom Line magnetic switch throw. The three pack kit will come with 3 each of LH & RH A5 machines, throwbar magnet holder, and turnout tie magnet holder. It’s an old Shapeways design but can now be printed for Keystone Customs. The A5 switch machine snaps onto either end of the throwbar hole and can be used as the grip, however a finger between the points works perfectly.

I may also try to print my Atlas Code 55 magnetic version for potential sale which can actually carry the current to the frog.



To go along with all of the switch fodder, are three packs of decorative pneumatic control valve boxes.



I am really having fun printing again. Something I was not able to do with my Mono.

Never thought I’d be able to print this. Tried many times on my Mono X to no avail. One of my earliest offerings will be back in the queue. The X31f class “Turtle roof” conversion for a Fine N Scale X31a boxcar. Tichy makes N Scale decals for it.

These are very impressive looking prints. The fine detail is simply amazing! Were these printed with DLP resin?

@cgw277 , yes they are printed using AC DLP resin on my two AC DLP D2 machines.  I honestly believe its this resin that keeps them so clean.  Also pooling at the tips of supports is an absolute minimum, which was one of my biggest issues with the AC Mono X.

This printer continues to amaze me, making printing really fun again.

Testing some of my truck designs. Testing these first as some folks requested them, and it proves that my most feared and fragile design is in fact printable. It’s not often that I am speechless. Note the images below of my roller and friction bearing Q trucks, including the one with a generator, which is surprisingly robust. Note the equalizer rod which is only 0.4mm in diameter. I tried removing the supports on the rod before curing which failed. Then I tried after curing with a brand new exacto blade.













The trucks after cleaning the axle pockets, with ESM 33” x0.540” axle length. They roll extremely well.

Man, these look really nice!  I mean REALLY!  So much better than what Shapeways was doing for you...much smoother with much more definite details...including the "equalizer rod" too (which was called a "torsion bar")!  A vast improvement IMHO 

However, I do have one nit to pick.  Me being a SUPF, ya gotta stop calling these "Q-trucks"...because they're not.  They're "Outside Swing Hanger Trucks"...with steel frames.  UP's "Q-trucks" were late 1800's short 5' passenger trucks developed originally by the CB&Q (hence, the moniker "Q" trucks) in the late 1800's with a white oak frame and a combination of leaf & coil springs...and were loved by crews on early non-standard UP cabooses they were applied to because of their excellent ride quality.

Your outside swing hanger steel trucks (with friction bearings) were applied to UP's CA3/CA4 (what the IMR Centralia Car Shops riveted steel cabooses are) starting in February of 1952 (ten years after the CA3's were first introduced in 1942) eventually replacing the wood-framed "Q" trucks both the CA3 & CA4's were originally equipped with by 1958.  However, this makes them correct for only the yellow paint scheme, not the original UP freight car red scheme which was phased out starting in 1947 until about 1950. This means that none of the IMR CCS fright car red cabooses have the correct trucks under them.

Your roller-bearing equipped outside swing hanger trucks started appearing on CA3/CA4 cabooses for sure in 1975 when two CA3's and seven CA4's were modified for Pool Service, which required the belt-driven generator that's on your model of this truck.  Pool Service UP cabooses can be readily identified by the large red "P" on each of the four sides of the cupola and car sides, along with other specific car modifications and lettering. However, non-pool service CA3/CA4 cabooses also converted to the roller bearing, generator equipped outside swing hanger trucks over time until most of them were riding on these style of trucks because of their "Cadillac" ride quality, some of them perhaps earlier than Pool Service CA3/CA4's, starting in 1969.

Thanks Bob, that image finally clears things up. I don’t even know how or why that stuck in my head. I forgot who even requested these. If you don’t pmind, I’ll use OSH so I can get that name to fit in my excel file, lol.

I continue to be amazed with these printers as well...  I've been printing a lot of 1/32" scale boat parts for a project my father in law is working on.  Even though it's a larger scale, there doesn't seem to be much limitation on how small a detail I add that can be replicated in the print.  I added a loop for a padlock on one of the parts.  It had a 0.005" cross section, closed "U" shape.  And it printed perfectly!  Very fragile, but it looks like it's ready for a padlock.

I printed some HO scale Model T wheels for him a while back to replace some missing and/or rather crude parts that came with a few kits he was building.  After a bit of trial and error, the parts printed perfectly with unbelievably fine spoke cross sections.

I've been printing rivets and bolt heads down to 0.005-0.006" and they show up pretty easily on the print.

Y'all might take a look at the last image John posted. The truck on the right - he added the generator drive belt to the pulleys. It's thread, but regardless... wow.

Here is the supports for the truck. Lower part of the large idler pulley was missing so I added a wire support between it and the drive pulleys.  I believe these are ready to offer tomorrow.





Little bit of ex wire and some ca and we have a drive! If I can do it you can!
