You joke but that is something that can done with JMRI. You just run the Decoder motor output to the rails.

So now the body has no headlight, stack, domes, or bell.


They are all printed separately:


The inside of the body tank had a little lip to it. When I was thinking about adding weight. I want to make a 3D mold to melt Bismuth into along with some tungsten bits. With that lip the new weight would not drop in. So I removed the lip. Changing the lip also changed the chassis block that sat on the lip. So the "final" chassis is printed and painted black.

I'm never going to get a good pic of this so here is a screen shot of the back head detail.

It runs! Was hard because the spoked wheel inserts and side rods are already in place. So when gluing the worms to the lay shaft I had to make sure any lash was in the same direction for each wheel. Usually you just glue them all in place- then glue in the wheel centers. But it worked.  :scared:

Then I put the pick-up strips in. First .0125" dia. then .010" I had to loosen the bottom plate screws. 0.008" wire is not the straightest so instead I will just make a few different bottom plates with various depth grooves for the wire. I know the wire is touching the axles because if I tighten the bottom screws while running it slows down.

Another stupid idea, but this one will work. I bought some Lego bevel gears to make a shaft that goes down the the underside of the layout. There will be another set under there going to the motor.



Just don't want to cram everything into the building.

This is why we can't have nice things nice things take so long...

Playing around on the screen for a better way to route the pick-ups.



On "paper" those .015" strips hang down .002" into the axle slot.

And I'm still not done because even though the wire fit perfectly in place. I am now printing a new chassis block that will let the strip snap into place. Never ending. At least I have a body I'm happy with  :|

Can't remember if you are using Fusion or not but if so they have a gear generator that is very easy to use....

Well it sure does look pretty, but it runs like $hit.  :|  This is running at full speed. It goes much slower, but has trouble picking up power. The thing is just too small.

Before doing anything rash. Maybe attach some mini 2 pin du pont connectors to the Rear coupler and make a couple cheater pickup cars.

The Dem34 orphanage for miniature steam is also always open and willing to pay a finders fee.

Not sure if it helps, but I feel your pain Chris...  It's been a long time (about 25yrs), but in my early mechanism building days, I had a lot of failures.  The mechanisms would look great, but ran terribly for one reason or another.  One in particular did meet its end against the basement wall after several frustrating hours of building/rebuilding.  Luckily, I had access to a near inexhaustible supply of parts and eventually figured stuff out.

I wouldn't smash it...  Give it a bit of a think on a different pick-up design and make some changes (if possible, that thing is damn small!!).

But yeah...  Larger scales are definitely easier!  That's why I moved up to Sn2 from HOn2/HOn30.
