Need help with ESU V5 decoder
« on: April 20, 2025, 07:23:18 PM »

I'm trying to get the sound to fire up when there is track power.
I went into the "decoder" with the programer, then to "driving characteristics" and unchecked the "delay starting"

And then "write"
After doing this, I still need to hit F8 to get the sound to come on.
What am I not doing right????

Hi Rodney.

First, it's usually F8, not F6, that turns on the sound.  Assuming you've just got a typo here, the answer is that you must go to the Function  assignments table, and in each spot where you see "F8", click on that box and change it the drop down box to "off" from "on" (you should have three choices: Ignore, On and Off).  When you are done, the function assignment line will show "not F8" where it used to show "F8."

I just did it to one of mine, I knew you could, but I just didn't know how. What I did was in function mapping, change F8 from ON to IGNORE, and the engine sounds came on when I applied power. It notched up as well when I increased power. ( I was afraid it would just sit at idle). This seems to be what you are looking for? Start delay is the feature that lets the engine sounds ramp up for a moment before the locomotive starts to move. I leave that on.

Actually, I just did as @jdcolombo said, and it lets you shut the sound off with F8. That seems like the better way to go.
@rodsup9000 I just saw your layout build thread! WOW, I have some reading to do! Nice layout!

Thanks John,
I'll try that later tonight.

 Thanks Leon,
Thanks for the layout comment. I haven't updated it in a while.
I guess I need to do that.
Did have a Ops session yesterday, but didn't get any photos. Had 12 over and everybody had a good time.

Yes, the reason to use "off" for F8 instead of "ignore" is that then you can press F8 to shut off the sound if you want.  Otherwise there literally is no way to shut down the sound if the layout has power.
