Now that 3D printers are getting such fine resolution, how about things like the raised "B&O"-in-a-circle heralds for the noses of steam and diesel locomotives in the transition era? Most were flat. but some on the noses of Es and E-6s were creased to fit the sharp noses. And, for that matter, how about custom prints of raised numbers in circular smokebox door placards?
I suspect Chuck wants to model those small thin stabilizing brackets in N scale. Those would be difficult to model by hand, but even 3D printed, they would likely be seriously out of scale (as they already are in H0). I think that photoetchign the entire sign would be something to consider. That way it could be closer to scale and also likely sturdier than 3D print.
Not everything lends itself to 3-D printing. This sign is one of those that you’re better off scratch building yourself. The easiest way to do this is get some thick card stock that will fit into a laser printer and create the sign in Microsoft Word or some other similar software Than print it and cut it out using a SERB. A .15 or .20 styrene rod can then be cut to size and the sign glued to it. Total time 15 minutes total cost maybe $.10 …. If I were to print it, it would take probably 15 minutes to design it another 15 minutes to get it ready for printing another two hours to print because the first three prints would fail and would have to start all over again. 15 minutes to wash and cure, five minutes to prepare the shipping label 30 minutes to find the box to put it in and five dollars for the post office to mail it to you.😉
