A Rayonier Baldwin S-12

Bryan asked me if I could do a “how to” for my Rayonier Baldwin.  I did find some photos of it at several stages, so I hope this will show how it went together.
It all started with a Hallmark S-12 and a desire to have at least one Rayonier Baldwin while I still worked for Rayonier in New Zealand.  I have my Baldwin, but I left Rayonier in 2004!!

The forestry railroad had two locations, Crane Creek and Sekieu.  The switchers were at Sekieu, firstly 201 and 202 bought new and later 203 which is now on the McLeod River.
Judging by the photos I was sent, they spent a lot of time on the ground, hence the rerailers, air jacks and lifting arm.  Lots of typical forestry railroad bits on these units.  These photos (the first downloaded with credit to the owner) show the 202 at Sekieu, the other two show the jacks and lifting arm getting a workout.  The B&W photos were sent to me by a former Rayonier employee, but I’m sorry I can’t remember his name.

Tomorrow I will add the model photos with some explanations.
Cheers
Steve

Thank you! Lifting arm? I always referred to it as the trolley pole for lack of knowledge. And, yes, I know none of the lines were electrified.

I'm really curious if you used a commercial drive and which, if so.

The model is a standard Hallmark S-12 as shown in the Spookshow link:  http://www.spookshow.net/loco/hmbaldswitch.html

It has a fairly standard switcher wheelbase of 22'-8", a lot shorter than the VO-1000.  Potentially it could be repowered with an Atlas S-2 chassis or similar.  I'm just finishing off the labelling on my model photos and will post them in the morning (which will be Thursday here).

Looking forward to watching your progress on this project.

I repowered all of my brass switchers with either Atlas or Bachmann mechs.

Here is my Hallmark DS-4-4-10 using a Bachmann mech (S-4):

I did an S12 a while ago using a Shapeways shell over a Bachmann S4 mechanism.  The Bachmann runs beautifully and even better when the stock decoder is replaced with a LokSound. The ESU Baldwin sound file is nice.

Have the S12 shells on Shapeways become available anywhere else yet?

Nice job on the SP unit Wolf, when you first posted those photos, it was motivation to at least get mine out of the box and hope it finished itself.

The model photos start with a couple showing the unpainted model and what was added to the Hallmark model.  Although the model is nice, it was void of a lot of the hood top lids and grill.  I hope the photos explain what I added and what the parts were for.  Please ask questions if you wish to know more, I have several more B&W close up photos.  There are some small jobs still to do, like twin sealed beam headlights.  I compromised on a few things, but the result is okay.

At the moment the unit is non-operational and minus couplers.  I’m not sure whether to put N or Z scale couplers on it.  I will get it running again one day, it was running when I got it 20 or more years ago.  It’s funny how close up photos always show up small defects.  It’s not my best work, but I’m not going to Specsavers any time soon.

One day I might get my ‘big headlight’ former SP AS-616 in Rayonier colours, I have the decals, I just need the Baldwin.

The photo says lifting jack cables, but the jacks are likely air operated.

Cheers

Yeah - the "stock" S-12 was pretty sparse in the detail department (On top of the hood)

Added details:

Painted and reassembled. (Original chassis) - I have converted her to a Bachmann mech.

Thanks,
Wolf
