Skunk Works? Like Lockheed? Wouldn't that be so secret anyone you show the modules to, you have to kill? I mean, it's a good reason not to have buildings on the modules though.

After being sidetracked got back to painting some of the sawmill interior detail.  I can do this for about 2 hours max and then need to take a break.



Painted the docks and exterior stairs about a week ago and today ....





.... painted the recut saw and the planer station.

Lumber that goes down the green chain and which has defects gets pulled from the green chain and sent back into the mill to be recut.  It comes off the saw and the conveyor belt shoots it back on the chain between the trim saw and the green chain where it moves back to the green chain for sorting.

Lumber that is to be planed moves from the green chain to air dry in the yard.  When ready it goes back into the mill and run through the planer and then also back to the green chain for sorting.

Last week was busy, but I managed some major strides in completing some Southern Railway cars for the NY sections of "The Crescent," "The Southerner," and the "Peach Queen" (which was combined with PRR/NH-171 "The Patriot").  Utilizing the Kato ACF 10-6 sleepers, I stripped and repainted and applied K4 Decals.

I picked Dan River and York River for names not only due to their assignment to the Crescent, but also due to their significance in the Revolution, as I'm a bit of a history buff...

Bachmann's streamlined observation car looks very close to the class of observations on the markers of "The Crescent."  There were several observations assigned to "The Crescent" but many cars that protected the service were owned by other railroads, such as the L&N's "Royal Street."  Although I would've liked to model "Royal Street" since she's still around, I cannot find a source for L&N streamlined decals.  Plus, "Royal Arch" will make a good-enough stand-in car for the tavern-observation of "The Southerner."  I also decided on a generic SR drumhead on the markers instead of the square tailsigns for specific trains that the SOU utilized.

Planning on a few more SOU 10-6 sleepers and some coaches down the road.  A Walthers L&N 10-6 "Pearl River" is also in the mail to add to the train.

Not strictly model railroading, but I built a computer desk for my new train room.   Double keyboard drawers - the top one is for a music keyboard.
Next is the workbench, then the layout starts (see picture on computer monitor)!

I took a few photos of my Milwaukee Road Pioneer Limited running on the Modutrak layout at the Mad City Model Railroad Show in Madison, WI this past weekend.  Most of these photos are taken on my 10' Wisconsin Dells modules.  Depot and freight house are scratch built from plans I secured from Depots by John.  The bridge is kit bashed from Walthers and Micro Engineering parts.

This consist is from December 22-23, 1959; Eastbound between Minneapolis and Chicago.

Most of the cars have been modified to some degree or are built from Union Station Products or Brass Car Sides.

I took a break from N-20 cabooses to do some weathering experiments on a 52' gondola that has been through the ringer (microwave) and acquired a "broken back" look.  It was weathered with chalks primarily, with a little chipping done with a hobby knife, and a wash.  I fixed/sealed with some Windsor & Newton matte varnish thinned about 5-1 (maybe a bit more) and it worked nicely I think.     



Last year I picked up a used AZL SD70M but the pilots has big gaps to allow for truck-mounted couplers.  A plain truck is provided so you can change to a body mount, but I didn't have one of the inserts (and couldn't find one in the usual spots)--so I designed one.  This is a test for fit, the final has a little more detail.  The plow came out nicely I think and because the resin is flexible seems robust enough for regular use.  Also, the wheel stops are Hayes model 430F that I designed & printed.

Finished removing the last of the atlas code 55 switches from the layout. Now all the switches on the layout are handlaid using Fast Tracks jigs. Operation is so much better now. And reliable.
