Very nice! As a bit of a passenger freak I know the satisfaction of finishing up a unique home road project, and The Milwaukee Road really had a special style. Have you considered adding window blinds for that ‘lived in look’?

I prefer PolyScale Conrail Blue.  My KV caboose is PolyScale, as are a number of other models.  Looks fine under daylight fluorescent lighting, as well as under sunlight.

It might be a more accurate color, but when mixed in with Atlas stuff it looks "off". It's why I've standardized on the wrong D&H Avon Blue color. I've found consistency to look better than accuracy.

Consistency is nice, but what do you do when the prototype was inconsistent?  BN 810, formerly an NP freight F9, had just been repainted.  6310 was built  in October of 1971, so it's paint was 5 1/2 years old.  Note that 6310 isn't the same shade as 1737, the next one in line.

Consistency is nice, but what do you do when the prototype was inconsistent?  BN 810, formerly an NP freight F9, had just been repainted.  6310 was built  in October of 1971, so it's paint was 5 1/2 years old.  Note that 6310 isn't the same shade as 1737, the next one in line.

I don't worry about it.  Since the prototypes didn't worry about it, neither do I any more.   

Actually, I kinda like it because color variation is more prototypical than every engine's shades of paint in your roster being exactly the same color.

To carry it even further, if you look closely at engine #6310, you can see that various portions of the body are also different shades of green.  Now THAT would be very cool to do some engines with slightly different shades of the main color!!

Very common on hood units that have been around awhile.  Besides minor repairs and touch-ups, doors don't always go back on the same unit.  It wouldn't be a hard detail to model, especially in the larger scales.  Just mask around a door or two, and paint them.

I will admit that, in the years I lived next to the BN, 1970-1978, I never say a locomotive nearly as bright as the 810.  A few freight cars, yes, but certainly no locomotives.

Not to mention swapping doors around. More than one SP loco eventually had the lettering out of order.

Looks like that unit overheated slightly.

The point is well taken, but my experience is that models "look weird" when there's too much variation in things that our brains expect to be similar. It gets into those "perception vs reality" things that we always have to dance with when recreating stuff in miniature.

Man, 810 looks like it was photoshopped - never seen that color on a BN unit!

That said, paint does not always fade at the same rate - we can point to endless examples of that.
