I understand- that decision was not up to me. Management decided they wanted to offer a DCC Sound model since we didn't have a 19th century locomotive with those features initially, and that they only wanted to spend the money to order the DCC Sound version, and not DCC Ready at the same time. It's something we may be able to offer after the DCC Sound versions have been available for a while.

Please tell me it at least uses a standard connector for the decoder like NEXT-18.

While I don't know if it is possible to fit in a small model like this, but keep in mind that more and more manufacturers produce models that are DC/DCC ready.  The model's circuit board with the track, headlight, and motor connections also has one of the several possible DCC socket on it, so the same model can be sold as a DC/DCC ready (with a dummy DC plug installed), or as a DCC model with a decoder installed in the socket at the manufacturing time.  This configuration has been used for quite some time by European manufacturers (like some 20+ years old Minitrix models I own) and most recently Broadway Limited also started selling "stealth" version of their locomotives.  Atlas, Fox Valley, and other manufacturers are also using this configuration. That way, using the same circuit board, a model can be marketed to all three types of modelers.

Will this be Bachmann's policy going forward? I'm really happy to see the Next18 in the SD40-2, and it makes me much more likely to buy Bachmann products in the future.

It looks like these urls expired - any chance of updating them? Would love to see what the samples look like as this is on my most anticipated model releases!

Hi all, the engineering samples have arrived:

Strange as I still see those photos in the earlier post.  But I saved them to the forum's gallery.

odd! It just looks like empty boxes on my end (and clicking them just brings up a loading message that never goes away).  But thank you for re-posting them!

They look great though, and can't come soon enough haha

Peteski, thanks for reuploading the photos. I don't have the permissions yet to upload to the gallery, so I copied the direct link from our Facebook page, and the links must have expired.

I see a a lot of kitbashing potential, I am wondering how long until someone makes one that would be a 1920's version with air brakes and a boiler tube cowcatcher and an MTL 905

Having seen them over the weekend I came away with four thoughts.

1) They are very nice and with quality printing will be stunning.

2) The wheels are thicc. I forgot to look to see if they are pancake drivers or not, but even if they are they are so deep you will barely notice. Aftermarket pilot wheels will be coveted.

3) Not doing a post-WW1 version in batch #1 is a miss.

4) Street price of $275-300 seems appropriate for the level of detail. More than that is pushing it.

They do have see-through spokes, but yes it is hard to see the daylight looking through the driver. The drivers have such a small diameter that the spokes are short and as you said, the drivers are rather thick (or should I say that they are typical oversize thickness of N scale driver wheels).  The wheels (the driver's tire and the spokes are single piece metal part). Many European stem steam locos have a metal tire or rim and plastic spokes which are thinner than the tire's width. That gives them a more open look.
