I noted puddles of lubrication when I took the truck bottom plates off to mess with the axle wipers. Way more than necessary.

Sorry to dig up a (kinda) old topic, it seems the next round of these engines are being shipped.  Can someone confirm whether an ESU LokPilot 59828 will fit these?

I can't imagine it won't.

My first run one has an ESU Loksound decoder snapped in. It was painless.

Painless proves you didn't feel a thing. If that's the case, you're not doing it right.

Thanks Ed, I suspect the same, but the prevdiscussion about certain decoders being a touch too wide for the shell pinged my interest.

Well, there is something to that statement.  I believe the early ESU 58828 LokSound 5 decoder with Next18 interface was a bit too wide for some N scale narrow-hood models. They then produced a nano version which is a bit narrower: 58928.

But if that model happens to have E24 interface, then the nano E24 should fit comfortably.

Just checked https://www.spookshow.net/loco/atlassd45.html and it does have  Next18 connector, so 58928 should work.

Thanks Peteski! So that means the LokPilot 5 Micro (59828) is probably too wide.

Since I don't own that model, someone else will have to answer that.  The decoder's dimensions are available online (on Streamlined Backshop site or even ESU site).

Hold that thought. I put a LokPilot in a new Atlas SD45 with no trouble. All my train stuff is at another location, so I can't quote chapter and verse on specific decoder at the moment. I'll log on from the train room and update once I venture over there.

Just verified. 59828 is the correct decoder for the Atlas SD45. I have installed two so far, four more to go (busy workbench).

That just shows that the narrower 58928 (Next18 nano) will also fit.  Price should be the same for both decoders.

So who's got the best deal on these?

And has anyone actually seen pics of the latest run? Even Atlas is still using artwork.

I got my 3 Guilford units on Friday.  They look great, and have high mount bells on the long hood as they did when Guilford took ownership of them.

I guess my bitching about the missing bell on the N&W units paid off! (I contacted Atlas directly about this)    The long hood bell Guilford units should be ex-SOUTHERN.
