I was just talking about the misspelling. That is a pretty good sign it is a scam e-mail. I got it too, but just deleted it.

"Thangs" could very easily be a tongue-in-check moniker in an increasingly difficult attempt to get attention in an Internet-saturated world. Like "DuckDuckGo". Who would conclude from the name that it was a search engine? At least "Thangs" is easily understandable as a sophomoric mutation of "Things".

So I don't see how this gets us back to a service that will provide printed models to people.

I got the email and when I go to the thangs site and search for n scale stuff it directs me to thingiverse.  I already use it and it is not a print service but a storehouse for designers to make their designs available to people who have printers.  While I like that ability most designers won't use it since they aren't getting any returns through thingiverse.

I still can't figure out the tie in between thingiverse and thangs.  are they the same company?

Thingiverse - owned by ultimaker, who makes printers… just like printables is owned by prusa and autodesk owns another site… I’ll edit this once I recall what it is. Tinkercad or something. (it is Tinkercad)

Thangs appears to be a search engine? And may host files as well? I am not sure why they felt it a worthwhile acquisition.

It appears that Thangs does host some files and they appear to have storefronts or what they call collections. But why are they acting as an aggregator of these designs?  I mean if they will eventually be offering print services (which they say is coming in the FAQ). Then why bring up search results from all over the web?  I doubt you will be able to print on demand from their search results since most aren’t even on their platform.

And when they do start to offer print services where is it going to be done?  This shapeways group seems to based in Europe and my understanding is that the US side is as dead and gone as the dodo. Is there another service in the US that can do that?  Or is everything going to come from Europe?  Lots of questions.

I'm out of the loop. I just re-created a profile at Shapeways. Does the site work in the US currently? Has anyone ordered from them recently?
