N Scale Stacks of Lumber ...

Been working on the sawmill design so I could work on the scenery in that area once I know how much space it is going to take up.  A sawmill produces lumber so worked on that also.

These are stacks of 2 x 4's, 2 x 6's, 2 x 8's, 2 x 10's and 2 x 12's in stack lengths of 8', 12' and 16'. The stacks are roughly 4 feet wide by 4 feed high. The stacks can also be printed with or without some loose boards on the top of the stack.

I printed these with my resin printer as some of the detail is probably to small for a filament printer but might work.

There are three missing stacks above as those stacks/prints came off their supports during the print so will need to reprint them at some point if I want them. The next images show the stacks as designed using Fusion 360.

I was able to get all of the stacks on the build plate of the AnyCubic Photon M3 but 3 failed during the print when they came off their supports (see image further up this page).

You can find the print files for the 2 x 4 stacks here....  https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:6485666

Nice models ..

For my workflow - If I have a large number of items like this I like to angle them and add extra supports ..

Thanks and a good point.

I usually do angle what I'm printing but just wanted to get these printed to see if I was happy with them or not and get back to what I should be working on.  I'll come back later and print a lot more for the sawmill complex.

Not to be picky, but if these represent rough sawn boards, there would be air gaps with "stickers" (scrap spacers) in between each row for air drying until they are ready to be shipped to the kiln plant.  Used to buy all of my woodworking material this way.  ***Reminds me I still have 200 board feet of #2 cherry in my garage attic.

Yep, that is right.  Built my first house all out of rough sawn and air dried it myself as I bought it green.  Got a fair amount....

.... of rough sawn in the house I built and that we are living in now also.  I'm 80 and still hopefully have a lot to get done on the layout so not into the utmost detail at this point anymore.  I'll leave that to someone else.  These will be close enough for me  ;)  Most of the 3D prints I've got up will be of similar quality or lack of.

What kind of price difference is there with rough cut / green vs the stuff you get in big box / lumber store?   How long to dry? I guess that depends on the climate?   Do you use a planer then to finish it after drying?

As far as the stacking .. I'm not sure it matters too much for something like this that's basically a scene filler .. some of the resin loads sold prior to 3D printing weren't all that detailed either ..  but you could design it that way for sure ..

I'm going to use these as they are since I will have a couple of lumber dealers on the new layout ..  what color would these get painted?

Lots of variables there.  When I built my first house I was in northern Wyoming and there was a small family mill there that I bought my lumber from.  This was the '70's and I think I paid about 12-15 cents a board foot.  I built the 850 sq. ft. house for a total of $3800 plus $1200 to put a well in and $35 I paid a guy with a backhoe to dig a hole for the septic tank and leach field.  My current house I paid about that much for the building permit.  The newest house was built 20 years ago (pictures above) and can't remember what the rough sawn cost from a local mill here but I think it was about 1/2 of milled lumber.  I never finished...

https://purplesagetradingpost.com/sumner/wyo-house/wyo-house.html

.... the lumber in either house as I like the looks of it (inside above was first house).  The newest house though has planed aspen for the walls, also bought from a local mill and I think it was about $1 a square foot when I bought it.  This house is 1200 square feet with an attached 1600 sq. ft. shop and it cost about $70,000 to build (I did all the labor) and a couple years working almost every day for part of the day as I still worked.

Yes the climate is the determining factor (humidity).  In Wyoming it is low and I air dried for about 3 summer/fall months as I prepared to build and started the build.  Here in Utah were we are the humidity is around 10% and I wasn't framing with rough lumber so bought it and let it dry while I framed the exterior walls before I started to use it for posts/beams and ceiling joists.  Some of the large timbers still twisted over time but no harm there.

As far as the stacking .. I'm not sure it matters too much for something like this that's basically a scene filler .. some of the resin loads sold prior to 3D printing weren't all that detailed either ..  but you could design it that way for sure ..

My view exactly and how I treat a lot I'm doing as I don't see taking the time anymore to spend it on things I can barely see.  It could be done but the stickers in the picture above that was posted are probably 1x's or less and that is only about .006' so even with a resin printer hard to print and see.  I can't see the individual board lines now for the 2 inch thick boards from the stack sides unless I'm holding it in my hand with a light on it and they are .014" with a .008" gap between them.

I appreciate the work that is extremely detailed it just isn't me  ;).

what color would these get painted?

Sorry, forgot to address the 'color'.

The stacks I painted and posted above are way too dark.  I worked on a lighter color without much success but will keep at it for future stacks until I get closer to the color of the stacks that John posted a picture of.  Different woods are going to be different shades.  My beams, posts and ceiling joists are ponderosa pine and darker (not a lot) than the aspen I used for the walls in the current house.  They both darker also over time even in the house where they aren't exposed to the sun.  I put a clear coating on the walls of the house to slow that down.  Outside exposed to the sun if not painted or stained they will usually turn more grey like a lot of old barns you see.

Another shade that you can find now in the west is 'beetle killed pine'.  Pines have been killed in very large areas by bark beetle infestations.  If the timber is harvested soon after dying the lumber can look like the image above when cut.  If the trees aren't harvested they become worthless over time.
