Ferromex completely sold out already at Lombard, and most road names have at least 1 or more rd #s off the board.

Going extinct like dinosaurs.

I'd say Aurora hit a grand slam.

Well, my order showed up yesterday, and I am very happy  :P

 ;)

First the superlatives: the level of detail is outstanding, and the assembly is first rate.  There are no sloppy glue joints, or parts that look like they'll snap off the moment you look away, yet the detail is state of the art.   The pad printing is outstanding and the paint is good.  I do think the yellow is a wee bit light compared to the MTL car, but I don't mind the variation, and weathering will take care of it nicely.  Here are a few shots comparing the two models:

The brake lines are some of the best I've seen (save for not being painted):

as are the door details:

The trucks are definitely too tight for reliable tracking, I already had one car derail on its first run around the layout, so I'll be reaming the bolster holes a bit.  (But the truck detail is excellent.)  The wheels are so-so, but I'll be replacing those, same with the couplers.  (Hello N-Possible.)

All in all, I give these a solid A, and I find the price to be a steal given the level of quality and detail.  What a great entry into the N scale marketplace, Aurora!

A quick follow-up on the trucks: I found a 7/64" drill bit to be just about perfect for reaming out the truck bolster hole (this is a standard pilot bit for a #6 screw).   I also replaced the wheels with FVM 3601 wheels, mainly for their better appearance; but that is just personal preference.  The cars now track as smoothly as glass.

I did have a few of the brake beam parts on the trucks come loose while doing this, so I would advise checking your trucks.  If this part comes off during operation, it is likely to cause a nasty derailment.  This is a perfect example of a pointless detail: unlike the more visible (and very well executed) under-frame detail on these cars, the brake beam is completely invisible in all operational circumstances except a derailment.  Both Rapido and Aurora have included this detail on recent models.  It must be a Canadian thing, eh?

A derailed car will really show off those normally hidden underbody details... crafty Canadians.

Hopefully my cheeky bit of Canadian self-trolling was apparent.  ;)

I do have to add one correction to my above post though: unlike the Rapido centerbeam trucks, the brake beam on the Aurora trucks hangs over the top of the bolster.  So, while it can come loose when you're working on the trucks, it cannot come out during operation, so it is harmless (but still largely invisible).  These are really well done models.

I'm living the dream in Iowa, but I get the occasional ribbing when the odd 'Eh' or 'aboot' slips out... Toronto accent is sneaky :)

They vanished in the first couple hours cars were listed online.

I've not seen Hiawatha or Midwest post anything on those cars yet... they may be worth a look, as both carry Aurora's HO products.

Why not? Thought they would. Surprised Hogtrainz didn't list these
