-have any of you dabbled with "ballast magic" ? is this a similar methodology?

IIUC that is a methyl cellulose based powdered adhesive that is mixed with the ballast and applied onto the track as usual, then wet with water to activate it. This is in lieu of separately applying a glue (such as thinned white glue or matte medium).   I have never used it, so can't speak for how it works.

I tried it. I'm not going to trust it to be the only adhesive I use, but I DO like that, after getting stuff wet, it definitely helps it stay in place better when I REALLY hit it with glue.
