Working on my second tribute vintage-era coal hopper. Allegheny Midland 3-bay offset-side car, to pair with the Virginia & Ohio twin offset-side car. Bluford dimensional data black car with the capy data removed (due to bad positioning for AM) and white toner decals added. Decals are curing, weathering to follow.

This week started as disassembling a passenger train to paint windows along with some other cars I’m doing the same for, but ended up as fixing some trucks.

The Park car on my VIA Canadian is a Concor model which has working marker lights and a drum head. I originally fit it with Kato trucks for power. They made the car ride too high, are the type for skirted cars and they look terrible. I never even bothered painting them.

I decided to use Rapido trucks. They needed to have pick up wipers installed. I made a mounting post out of styrene tube and flared the end with a soldering iron. Now when pushed into the hole in the chassis they hold the trucks in place and have holes for phosphor bronze wires which act as pick ups. Yes I have less pick up contact than the Kato trucks but I have a constant lighting circuit which has worked on other cars so I’m not concerned.

I still have to finish wiring them in but here’s the finished ride.

Looks a bit odd, but it's brand spankin' new and sounds real throaty. For all I know right now it might be electric with a great sound system.

From the newspaper article you linked to:

"While the train resembles the historic original, it has been modernized with 21st-century technology to be a zero-emission battery, electric-power train."

I haven't done much of anything on the hobby front in a number of months due to excessive workload in the real world. That said, I finally have something to share! I have been quite intreagued recently by the various milk trains that ran in New England, over the CVR, Rutland, B&M, etc. Even though these milk trains never ran into Canada, many skirted the border in the lake Champlain area, which is close enough for me! Now I needed a fleet of assorted milk cars to run on the club layout (and some foreign power to haul said milk cars).

The first car I decided to tackle was the iconic Borden's Butterdish tank car, which is available in kit form by Ken Ray. I used trucks salvaged from an athearn 40ft Pfaudler reefer, reworked the main casting (the fins and brake stand looked odd to me), added end car plumbing, added a lip to the frame side sills, and made up some 3d printed endsills with poling pockets and rivet details. The car was painted in the later silver and black scheme with Vallejo paints.

Still need to reinstall couplers and shoot a final layer of dullcoat to seal the decals.

I plan on doing an assortment of 40ft and 50ft wood milk cars, track down an elusive Intermountain GPEX milk car, and do a few assorted passenger cars to tack on as appropriate. I hope to find a Rutland RS1, and I recently came across a late run LifeLike B&M BL2 to haul these cars, along with some CVR power I already have. (Otherwise I would have no need for RS1s and BL2s...)

I didn't think I'd finish the Allegheny Midland hopper tonight but the final weathering went faster than expected.

No Virginia Midland vintage representative to make unfortunately as the layout was first set in 1969.

With my next op session scheduled for tomorrow, I have been running work trains during the week primarily to keep the track clean, but also just to enjoy having the layout operational again.  Lets follow a ballast train westbound on the Dawson Creek Subdivision.

Backing up to the station to sign the register and collect our clearance:

Heading out of town across Washington Road with the Northwest Wood Preservers mill in the background:

Crossing the Kiskatinaw River:

Motoring through Progress:

Passing through Groundbirch and starting the descent down the helix:

Crossing Highway 97 just before Sundance:

We will set out the hoppers at Sundance for loading, and terminate in Chetwynd.

As you know I have a think for bridges. That Hwy 97 crossing is really cool and the Kiskatinaw River crossing will be epic!

Working on the entrance/exit to my north staging yard. It is a double portal that splits into two single portals. Going to try and use EVA foam for the liners, waiting for that to arrive. Progress so far.

I started work on a mail/baggage car for my 1950 Southern Pacific "Cascade".

These are Union Station Products styrene sides mounted on their new core kit with Kato 6 wheel roller bearing trucks (from the 20th Century Limited set).

The old American Limited core kits are a superior product (injection molded rather than 3D printed), but these will work.  I do like the roof details better, I just wish it was a better print.

The completed Cascade chair cars are by Railsmith (Lowell Smith).

22 roomette sleeper for my 1950 Southern Pacific "Cascade".

Union Station Products styrene sides on an American Limited core kit.  American Limited trucks with Kato wheels.  MT 1015 body mount couplers.

Roof and underbody details still need to be added.

The completed chair car is a Railsmith model.  This is the paint job the sleeper will be.

Nate - do you mix body-mount and truck-mount cars in the same consist, or are you converting your Railsmith cars to body mount?

I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that.
