Weekend Update 9/25/22

Looking at Dave V's RGS pictures, and reading the discussion on sill stripes, brings up a question:  Where do you put the stripes on a steam locomotive?

Not as odd a question as it might seem, as both the C&TS, D&SNG, and EBT cross public highways, and the C&TS is engaged in "interstate commerce", as they haul paying passengers across a state line.

They are not part of the national rail system. They cannot interchange cars so they don’t even come under AAR interchange rules. Interstate commerce means freight , not passengers. The FRA does appear to have have jurisdiction over the boilers however. Congress gave that authority after the boiler incident on the Gettysburg RR.

D&RGW/RGS practice from the late 30s onward was to paint the running boards and tender sill white or silver, although this was very inconsistently applied (for example, RGS 20 is restored to her mid-40s appearance and her running boards are black). D&SNG and C&TS both generally follow this practice, but soot and grime quickly dull it.

I’m working on my newest industry, a beer distributor, ‘cause why not?  I painted and installed the roof, doors, and utilities, and I backfilled against the foundation with lightweight spackling.

Sometimes UP , very rarely , has used one of their steam engines to move actual real deal freight trains .

Richie:  Very true.  I assume they put the modern striping on their steam, somewhere, since they're not a "museum" line.  They make other changes, as needed, to keep the locos up-to-date, so a few reflectors wouldn't be a big stretch.  I remember one news report where they used their Challenger as a rear-end helper for a stack train having engine problems.  That would have been a sight.

I don’t think it’s an AAR rule at all. The FRA has specific instructions how much reflectorization to apply and where. The UP very possibly has an FRA waiver to run the old engines. The reflector tape is actually marked as FRA compliant. If it’s not marked it has to be changed.

Came home from N Scale Weekend all jazzed to do some more TTrak planning.  Rho was working in North Carolina all week, so I had the kitchen table to myself for a few days.



With help of a 9v battery I soon had a train running, so naturally no actual work got done.  I was going to work on correcting the lighting issue, and perhaps start wiring up lights on the bridge module, but the Round Tuits I ordered never arrived.

My only choice was to take some pictures...

Managed some test prints this weekend - the grain auger will end up on the Aberdeen ..  the "office" container is a test project .. both HO and N .. I'm really starting to like the HO possibilities the printer gives me .

I'm shocked there are no readily available job office trailers out there, at least in N scale that I know of.  I've suggested them to DigCom Designs and he hinted at them being in the works but haven't seen anything yet from them.  I need 2 for Center St yard in Hanover.  Which someone just posted the other day they have removed the larger of the 2 there and brought in a new one apparently.

Good! You know, the retro stuff you do is fun to watch and I know you really enjoy it. But having come to know you when you were steeped in modeling the WM (and having the fortune to see/operate the layout), you'll always be a realistic prototype modeler in my mind. It's good to see you doing more "modern" modeling once again as well!

Having been to Cumberland, I'm always awed by how well you've captured it.
