AAAAAANNNNDDD, the x is see through with the option of an LED to illuminate it. The chassis will also have a recess for a speaker and according to Kato will be very heavy to improve pulling power.

The initial Bachmann model is a different prototype. The SC-44 is different than an ALC-42...

How similar are the various versions of this locomotive? Could a different shell with the same mech allow for brightline sets or the various regional versions?

There's also (or will be) the ALC-42E, which pairs with a car behind it that has either a pantograph or batteries, for the Northeast Corridor.  Don't think it's in service yet.

Anyway, I hope Kato offers the Day 1 scheme.

I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that.

I hope making it see through doesn't cost it too much pulling power. We already loose soo much weight for DCC and sound.
Alloy change to get weight back up?

But IIRC, they all share the same frame, body dims, etc. Sure, modern modelers are down to counting actual rivets, since modern locos all look so damn alike, but IMO Kato has delivered a nice punch to Bachmann that can be developed by the manufacturer and/or modeler.

If Kato offers theirs in the Washington state Cascades scheme, and it isn't $450, Like Bachmanns, I can overlook the differences between the ALC42, and the SC-44. I mean, $450 seems pretty steep to me, But I might just be getting old also.

I'm planning on modeling the current Cascade replacement service consists eventually, with a SC-44, 3 or 4 horizon coaches, a Horizon Cafe, then a F40 Cabbage. With Bachmann and Kato making the power, and Rapido making the Horizons cars, all I gotta find/build is a cabbage....

The Bachmann SC-44s (including the WADOT one) seem to priced at around $250ish at all of the usual stores that let you preorder.

Really? The lowest I have been able to find is $375. Got a link by any chance?
