A while back Rapido Trains began restoration of an exVIA Rail E sleeper, “Edmundston”. The car was cosmetically restored in the town of Orangville very near where I live. I thought it would be cool to build one of my own. (Actually I built four of them.). But I didn’t want to paint over cars that had Canadian paint jobs. It’s rare for us to get accurate models so I feel like I’m slighting the model train gods when I do. Soooooo sorry Pensy guys but to make four of these….

If it makes anyone feel better, I didn’t realize how different the cars were until I had them in hand. In addition to the expected stripping and painting, I needed to remove the skirts and step blobs, and replace them with custom made steps and add etched stirrups at the other end. I also had to replace the trucks with new parts from Rapido that better represent the prototype. The decals were custom made. Special thanks to @philippe.whyte for handling the artwork and custom decals and @Angus Shops for casting a whole pile of my scratch built steps! This project was one of those two steps forward, one step back type projects… which you would have seen if you saw my crinkled paint mishap a couple of weeks ago. But I got it done!







The other three are awaiting final assembly until the people who buy them tell me whether they want the batteries installed for the lighting. As much as I like the Rapido Easy-Peasy lighting, the batteries leak. I have some that leaked even just sitting in the Rapido packaging. No bueano! I opted to leave them out of the one I am keeping. If ever want to light it I’ll do it with track power.

Here’s the new LARC Products “Rico East View” backdrop (2' x 10') installed behind Rico, CO on the layout. It stands just about 26” above the rails. It replaces a backdrop I printed (same scene) on cardstock that only stood 11" tall and was under 5 feet long. These are the actual mountains behind the real town of Rico, just like the prototype.

I assembled another structure for my Missoula industrial area.  This one is loosely based on the lone commercial building in the area.  It is made from a store front that was built and cast by Doug Sherman who used to work for GHQ making masters.  The rest of it is a DPM kit. I named it after an actual business that was housed in this building.

I got sick of waiting to try to find a set of these cars on Ebay for a reasonable price, so I just repurposed ones that I had originally painted up for my "Texas Special" (I was able to get prototypically correct metal car sides for these two cars from Des Plaines Hobbies for my "Texas Special", so these cars were surplus).  These are Kato Super Chief cars painted and lettered for the Frisco "Meteor."  They are not prototypical, but are nice stand ins to go with the train that Lowell Smith is producing.

I got the last 4 sheets of drywall hung in my basement remodel project.  All joints mudded and taped.  Second coat hopefully tomorrow.  Maybe paint on the rest of the walls by next weekend

Nice update Dave! You’ve nailed the colors of Colorado in your scenery!

I built a few houses for the Dawson module this week. This is my first go at some laser cut kits, and are really just R&D to build up my scratch building chops. These will most likely be place holders until I get the time/skills to replicate the prototype.



Also starting to piece together just how exactly I’m going to build this coal loader.
